Dear friends and partners,
It has officially been two years since we all took unprecedented steps to confront a once in a century pandemic with no playbook in sight. As we continue moving toward a safe return to normality for our school communities, I am pleased that LAUSD will align with County public health guidance and move from required to optional indoor masking this Wednesday.
This pandemic laid bare the inequities so many Americans are facing—and I’m committed not only to a return to normality for our kids, but an acknowledgment of the crisis in our public education system that predated Covid. Now is the time to address that fact, so we can help our families and school communities emerge from this crisis better than the pre-pandemic status quo. Last week, I was in Washington, D.C. with a delegation of Los Angeles leaders, advocating to national representatives and the Department of Education to bring more support to our kids and families and accelerate academic progress, in the wake of the pandemic and beyond.
From the nation’s Capitol to the Board room here at home, I will continue advocating for more resources to accelerate academic progress and support student wellbeing – including tutoring, mentoring, summer learning opportunities, expanded arts programs, and more enrichment. We got through one of the darkest periods in recent history, and now we have an opportunity to build a brighter future for our kids.
Onward,

Today, I was thrilled to celebrate the official launch of our historic "Opportunity LA" program, providing college savings accounts for all LAUSD first graders! Over the past weeks, I had the chance to check in at Marina Del Rey MS, Goethe Charter ES, Marina EEC, Larchmont Charter ES, Marquez ES, and Topanga ES to visit classrooms and meet with school staff. It has also been exciting to continue meeting the new BD4 schools in the Reseda community, including Lokrantz SPED Center, Leichman CTC, and Third Street ES!

In the Spotlight: A school psychologist goes above and beyond for his kids

Steven Rude, school psychologist at the Lokrantz Special Education Center in Reseda, has been supporting students' wellbeing and advocating for the resources to help his school communities thrive since he first joined LAUSD more than 30 years ago. For the past 4 years, he has been working with Early Childhood Special Education as part of a team providing psychological evaluations for the District's youngest children, based at Lokrantz. During this time, Mr. Rude found a small plot of land on the school's campus, and decided to create a community garden to encourage kids to learn about science, promote healthy eating, and to get parents more involved. What started as a simple vision has blossomed into a thriving, accessible, therapeutic garden for the students, families, and school community members. Mr. Rude continues to find ways to channel his talents and passion into innovative new ideas and programs to serve our students with special needs, and we are so grateful for his work!
