Implicit Bias Workshop

March 25-28, 2022

Alaska EPSCoR, Alaska INBRE, and the UAF Department of Equity and Compliance are collaborating to offer a 3-part Implicit Bias Workshop
PART 1 - Watch Picture a Scientist, a film that chronicles the groundswell of researchers who are writing a new chapter for women scientists, and provide new perspectives on how to make science itself more diverse, equitable, and open to all.
  • March 25 @ 5pm - Live showing* at the UAF Pub 
  • March 25-27 - Virtual Viewing - Register to receive access to the online screening room, and watch the film as your schedule permits.
* A live showing at UAA is scheduled for April 15th, time and location TBA.
PART 2 - March 28 @ 11am-noon - Panel Discussion on Picture a Scientist via Zoom. Confirmed panel members are UAF VCR Nettie La Belle-Hamer, EPSCoR researcher Uma Bhatt, SCF Director of Research Denise Dillard, UAA Professor Jason Burkhead, UAS Associate Professor Sonia Nagorski, and UAF Equity and Compliance director and Title IX coordinator Margo Griffith. The panel will reply to questions related to the documentary and general Q&A. Please submit your questions in advance here. The panel will answer as many as time permits.

PART 3 - March 28 @ 12:30-3:00 pm - Implicit Bias Training via Zoom
Following a 30 minute lunch break afater the panel discussion, the training continues with a presentation by Ronnie Houchin and Margo Griffith. In advance of the session, please check out and take the Harvard Implicit Bias tests.

2022 ALASKA INDIGENOUS RESEARCH PROGRAM BY ANTHC & APU - Alaska Native and American Indian people have historically been underrepresented among researchers and health scientists. There is a need for Western-trained researchers to be culturally aware, respectful and responsive in meeting the diverse health needs of Indigenous communities. The goal of Alaska Indigenous Research Program is to increase th health research capacity of Alaska Native/American Indian people and communities by providing Indigenous-centered, cross-cultural research education and internships. 
  • Week One - Advanced Research - May 2-6 - Designed for experienced researchers and health professionals
  • Week Two - Research Ethics - May 9-13 - Designed for all levels of research experience
  • Week Three - Introductory Research - May 16-20 - Designed for those interested in health research

The New Mexico IDeA Networks of Biomedical Research Excellence (NM-INBRE) Sequencing and Bioinformatics Core invites you to apply for a pilot project award valued at approximately $5k-$10k to drive your research, publications and grants.
