Today marks the end of Global Public Health Week for 2022.

The overarching theme of the week was Public Health Matters: Building the New Future.

During the week;

  • There was the timely release of the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) report. The report provided an honest review of the world's inaction to bravely cut greenhouse gas emissions and limit global warming as required. The report provides options that are available for every sector to halve its emissions by 2030 (see the presentation here for a summary). So as the planet inches closer and closer to the tipping point we must demand that governments and corporations act morally, act drastically, and act now.

  • We ran a daily quiz to test your knowledge of the Public health week theme of the day. If you haven't tried them out already, the quizzes will be available until the 11th of April so there's still time to have a go. Are you the Public Health Guru in your team? Find out using the links below.

  • In Aotearoa, we also saw the resignation of the Director-General of Health Dr Ashley Bloomfield. Throughout the motu, there has been a strong feeling of gratitude for what he has done for Aotearoa. I think we can all consider ourselves lucky to have had a Director-General with a strong public health background throughout the early days of this pandemic. Showing everyone that a public health approach truly cares for everyone and really does matter.
So just as Dr Bloomfield is deserving of our thanks and gratitude, he is not alone. There are many public health workers/activists that diligently go about their business, making Aotearoa a healthier place. This public health week is as much a 'thank-you' for what has been done as it is a challenge to keep progressing forwards. We must build toward our common goals - being active and vocal about what we want - a healthy planet with healthy people.

Nā Rangi tatou, nā Tūānuku e takato nei; ko tatou tēnei
We are descended from Rangi (sky-father) and Papatuanuku (earth-mother); this is us.

Happy Public Health Week - to all.

Ngā mihi nui,
