Happy April, Friend!

Are You a Vowel or a Consonant?
When my daughters were learning to read, I wrote them a short story called “Letter Friends” to help them understand how certain letters always go together. In the story, “Q” was the Queen and really only talked to the letter “U.” The letter “P” was the class clown who loved to spell words like “playful” and “party,” but when he hung out with “H,” he tricked everyone by making an “F” sound which always made “F” really mad. “V” was happy when she got to spell words like “victory,” but would get sad when she had to spell a word like “vicious,” so she often stayed in during recess with the letters “Z “ and “X” who rarely came out to play.

As I wrote the story, it made me think about how some letters really are so easy and others can be difficult which made me wonder, “Are we sometimes like these complicated phonics?” In life, do you want to be easygoing or difficult? We always have a choice.

If you look at the vowels – a, e, o, i, and u – they are super easy-going letters. A can make short or long sounds and can even do both in the same word like participate. E knows when to be an excellent leader but can also step back so his letter friends can shine. The letter U can be strong like when it spells Unique or Up, but she knows when to be quiet as well. The letter I is both flexible and confident. She can stand alone as in I am, but she loves to hang out with other letter friends too. Sure, sometimes I gets into fights with E about which vowel takes the lead. And O is as flexible as its round letter indicates.

Then there are the consonants who can be pretty stubborn and needy. For example, if you have only one vowel in a sentence, you almost always have to double up your consonants as in bully and pass. Q will rarely spell a word without U. X almost always needs A or E to spell a word. And even though the consonants make all these rules, they change them on us all the time too. The letter C can sound like candy but put her with an H and she makes a totally different sound. Chew on that. And if the consonants aren’t changing up their moods, they’re denying their true power. The letter K is so shy that she often doesn’t speak at all and needs N to team up with her. She doesn’t know how strong she can be on her own. K is kind and often holds the key, but she hasn’t learned that yet. Often her sound is taken from her entirely like when CH team up and spell chasm. And then there are the consonants V, X, and Z who hang out at the back of the line and rarely zing us with their very extraordinary existence.

Vowels are the connectors helping keep people together – laughing, sharing, playing, talking, and learning from one another. Consonants, on the other hand, can be a bit co-dependent and shy or insist on stealing the limelight and often ignore others’ needs and wants.

So which one are you? Will you go through life with a flexible, happy-go-lucky vowel attitude who’s open to change, connection, and new friends? Or will you choose the path of the consonant who’s stuck in their ways or refuses to see their true light?

Personally, I consider myself a Y because she can be both a consonant and a vowel. Sometimes I feel extroverted and open like the vowels, but other times I am shy or stubborn like the consonants. I think as we progress on our spiritual path, it’s so important to accept all parts of ourselves – not just the ones we know others will find most pleasing or easy. Plus, the letter Y spells so many of my favorite words –happy, prayerful, psychic, joyful, and YES. As I embrace this new wave of my personal spiritual awakening, I am saying YES to all of me – the consonant and the vowel parts. But I am also saying YES to new opportunities and new doors waiting to be opened.

Choose Your Words

Words are powerful. Those 26 vowels and consonants gather together and can either tear us apart or sew us back together. Growing up with a verbally abusive mom, I am passionate about sharing the impact positive and negative words have on us. The saddest aspect of emotional abuse is that we often are our own worst enemies.

Recently, a listener shared a powerful dream experience. Jeff wrote to say he recently graduated college and hadn’t found success finding a new job. He had a dream in April that he was standing in front of a giant who was preparing to attack. But rather than devour him, the giant suddenly morphed into his father and began cutting him down with words. “You’re useless; you’ll never get a job. Who would want you?” Jeff reached for a slingshot and was about to perform a David and Goliath on his “giant” dad when suddenly the angry father morphed into the young man. In the dream, Jeff saw himself hugging this image of himself and said, “Shh, it’s going to be ok. You’re doing a good job. All will work out.”  When he woke up, Jeff decided to change his inner talk. “Even though I felt fake doing this, I started saying nice things about myself to myself throughout the day.” He spent the entire month focused on speaking kindly about himself and last week - he was hired for the job he wanted.

Words create. Start to monitor your interior dialogue and make a gentle note of thoughts, words, and emotions you have about yourself throughout your day. When you experience negative self-talk, simply visualize 4 Xs and say, “Clear, cancel, erase, delete.” Then replace it with a kind word or thought about yourself.

Speak kindly about yourself too. When someone gives you a compliment, accept it without excuse or apology. If you’re late for a meeting, rather than saying, “I am so sorry I’m late,” try, “Thank you for your patience.” If you make a mistake, don’t think, “I’m so stupid.” Instead, remind yourself that you’re trying and doing your best.

Exercise To Reduce Negative Self-Talk

Try this exercise to help reduce negative self-talk.

Place your hands over your Heart Chakra and visualize waves of pink, loving energy flowing from the Universe through your hands into your Heart Chakra and then vibrating out through your whole body.

Then visualize healing, green waves flowing through your hands into your energy. See these colors breaking up the residue of old hurts, wounds, and negative words.

Breathe deeply feeling the pink energy soak into every aspect of your energy filling you with Universal love.

Crystal of the Month: Chinese Writing Stone

Chinese Writing Stones help us communicate clearly and truthfully. Working with a Chinese Writing Stone enables us to feel valued and worthy. Often called Chinese Writing Rock or Porphyrite, it can be confused with Chinese Writing StoneChrysanthemum Stone.

You can tell the difference because the Chrysanthemum Stone has flowery inclusions of white feldspar whereas a Chinese Writing Stone tends to have inclusions that are straight markings resembling letters. Working with this stone links us to our Earth and Root Chakras helping us to feel grounded, rooted, and safe to speak our truth. Meditating with Chinese Writing Stones facilitates a more positive outlook not only on our life but on our innermost selves too.

It’s also known to encourage better dream recall and can be helpful for anyone seeking to access their Akashic Records. Keep one with you while you’re working on choosing positive, powerful words for yourself. Tuck one under your pillow to help you remember your dreams. Meditate with a Chinese Writing Stone to encourage positive self-love.
