Rural Women's Catch ups

Two further Rural Women's catchups were held this month.  Funded by the Foundation for Rural and Regional Renewal (FRRR) and the National Recovery and Resilience Agency (NRRA), the Catch Ups are aimed at bringing rural women together, strengthening rural communities and increasing the resilience of bush communities.  Short talks are included in the mornings, on topics including Mental Health, Women's health, funding and assistance, succession planning, gardening, and whatever other topics requested by attendees.  Our next scheduled Catch ups are Boomi 29th April and Upper Horton 13th May.

Living Soils Workshop, Bingara

30 participants thirsty for knowledge attended The Carbon Farm's Living Soils workshop on Tuesday 5th April.  This is the second in a series of 5 workshops which are a part of "The Carbon Farm" project, funded under the National Landcare Program's Smart Farms Small Grants funding stream.
Geoff shared his learnings on the benefits of improving soil health, which include increased production, increased nutrient density in pastures and produce, and creating soils which don't support weeds (undesirable plants).
Garry McDouall from The Carbon Farm project and Carbon Link also discussed the current Carbon Market and its opportunities and requirements.

Take a listen and find out why it is so important to restore riparian zones along river banks across NSW for native fish populations, fish habitat and the health of our rivers.

Landcare NSW has partnered with OzFish Unlimited to drive fish habitat action and provide project opportunities specifically for Landcare groups to improve their local waterways and deliver aquatic-based projects with local OzFish chapters across NSW.

Funding opportunities

Rural Assistance Authority Farm Innovation Fund

The Farm Innovation Fund is a long term, low interest rate loan scheme for NSW farmers for permanent on-farm infrastructure. The Farm Innovation Fund helps farmers to:

  • improve farm productivity - reduce risks and improve efficiencies by building fodder and grain storage facilities, sheds, fencing, roadworks and solar power conversions.
  • manage adverse seasonal conditions - improve water efficiencies with irrigation systems, cap and piping of bores, new dams, install water tanks and desilting of ground tanks.
  • ensure long term sustainability - increase the viability of a farm business and improve pasture and soil health, plant trees for shade and wildlife corridors, eradicate weeds, flood proof property and fence river banks.

Strengthening Rural Communities

The Strengthening Rural Communities (SRC) program aims to give the thousands of small rural, regional and remote communities across Australia an opportunity to access funding to support broad community needs.

Given the events of summer 2019/20, it has also been expanded to offer funding to support recovery in bushfire-affected communities.

Grants are available for a broad range of grassroots, community-led initiatives that directly and clearly benefit local communities. Applications are accepted on an ongoing basis and assessed quarterly.
