Don't Wait - Enter your Teams Now

The course is ready, we've verified the checkpoint locations, the
assembly area is booked and we're preparing the final documentation for the event.

Now all we need is you!

How to Enter
  1. Request an Entry Form - just send an email to geoff.hudson@gmail.com and we'll send a copy of this year's Entry Form and an Indemnity Form to you. This gives you the form and lets us know that you're interested.

  2. Complete the Entry Form - one for each team. This form provides information about the team and each of its members.

  3. Complete the Indemnity Form - everybody completes and signs one of these. For the schools event, this form ensures that parents have been notified and have given their permission for son/daughter to attend.

  4. Send the forms to us - via email if possible. If you only have paper copies, please take a picture with your mobile phone and send that to 0407 998 240. If all else fails, make sure that you bring them to the event.

  5. Payment - the easiest way to pay is by Credit Card at the event. As in previous years, we can invoice schools if that is more convenient.
If you need assistance or run into problems with the forms/registration process, please get in touch.

About the Event

This year's event will start from Little Bendigo Primary School in the Ballarat suburb of Nerrina. Directions to the start location will be provided in the Final Instructions provided to participants.

The event area is eucalypt forest with some complex goldmining terrain near the primary school. As one heads out to the North and East, the terrain becomes simpler and easier to follow. Towards the North and North-West there are some pine plantations, but only the stronger teams will reach these in the time available.

The area is ideal for novice navigators - it has a well-defined and signposted road network plus a myriad of tracks along some of the spurs and ridge lines - many of which lead to nearby checkpoints.

Food will be provided at the event. A local service club will provide a sausage sizzle (similar to a Bunnings Sausage Sizzle). Each participant is entitled to two sausages, bread etc. The VRA has covered the cost of these - please grab your food and enjoy it after the event.

About the Map

Like most rogaine maps, the scale will be 1:25,000 - each square in the grid you can see is 1 kilometre by 1 kilometre. The grid will be aligned to Magnetic North - making orienting the map that much easier (just line up the North lines on the map with the compass needle and the map is oriented correctly...just be sure that the North arrow on the map points the same way as the North end of the compass needle).

As you can see, the area has lots of tracks where you can travel quickly. The green area is pine forest and there are many tracks through it. Be careful - there are always unmapped tracks in an area like this - keep track of where you are and how far the next track junction is. Use pace-counting and contour information so you don't get confused by these extra tracks.

The course has been designed and set for those with moderate navigation skills - controls will be on well defined features with good attack points nearby. Controls more distant from the hash-house may not be as easy as those close in.

The Hash House will be located at Little Bendigo Primary School - as highlighted in yellow in the map below. A printable version will be distributed to all registered teams immediately prior to the event.
As soon as the map is completed, we'll send PDF copies to teachers, leaders and coaches - so they can brief their teams and start planning/preparation. We ask you not to share this file too widely as most other participants get it about one hour before the event.

MapRun Returns

Last year, we provided a GPS tracking capability that runs on IOS and Android phones. About 70 teams used this and were thrilled to see their track and instant scoring after the event:
  • NOTE: The rogaine works the same as always - you navigate, you walk, you visit checkpoints and punch the Navlight Punch at that location.
Prior to the Event
  • You load an app called MapRun6 - available from the Apple Store or Google Store.
  • You register your name or team number in the app
  • At home or at the event - load the event into the phone - see our MapRun Page for more information
At the Event
  • As the event starts, press Goto Start - as you pass through the start gate, the phone will beep and tell you that you've started
  • As you approach a control, the phone will beep and credit you with this control. The control turns green on the smartphone screen.
  • When you finish - the phone beeps to say that you're finished and uploads your track and your result.
If you press Show Results, you can look at your score to see how you and your friends did. If you press the Track button on this page, you can see where you went - this is really useful if you had trouble finding a control. There is no better way to learn than to look at where you went wrong and discuss how you would avoid making the same mistake next time.

If you want to try MapRun out before the event, please get in touch and we'll provide a simple course near you.

The app records your track and the controls visited.
When you get home - try the animation features provided by the app

Can you help?
While you may no longer be associated with such activities you may know who took over from you - or you may know of other teachers, schools, cadet units or scout troops that might be interested. If so, we'd be grateful if you could forward this email to them so they too can enjoy the event.
