Lessen Mental Illness Stigma

Did you know:
Mental illnesses are common and treatable medical conditions. Nearly 1 in 5 adults in the US experience mental illness in a given year

Many people are still not comfortable talking about mental illnesses and may even delay seeking treatment or support because of stigma. The sooner people get treatment, the greater their chances of recovery. The program Make it OK is a place to find information on how to support your or other’s mental health. The presentation will also cover self care to aid in mental health.
UW Stevens Point Employee Wellness is offering a 1.5 hour program on Wednesday May 4 from 12:00 - 1:30 in DUC 378.  There is an optional Q & A after from 1:30 - 2:00
Presenter: Lisa Grasshoff
Mental Health Navigation Coordinator
CAP Services, Inc.

Attending the presentation fulfills the wellbeing activity requirement of the Well Wisconsin program.

Health Information

Surprising Ways Alcohol Affects Your Health

Drinking gives your body work to do that keeps it from other processes. Once you drink, your body makes metabolizing it a priority – above processing anything else. Unlink proteins, carbohydrates, and fats, your body doesn’t have a way to store alcohol, so it has to move to the front of the metabolizing line. This is the reason that it affects your liver, as it’s your liver’s job to detoxify and remove alcohol from your blood.

Too much is bad for your heart. It can cause the heart to become weak (cardiomyopathy) and have an irregular beat pattern (arrhythmias). It also puts people at higher risk for developing high blood pressure.

It can affect your immune system. If you drink every day or almost every day, you might notice that you catch colds or other illnesses more frequently than other people. This is because alcohol can weaken the immune system and make the body more susceptible to infections.

Abusing alcohol causes bacteria to grow in your gut. This can eventually migrate thought the intestinal wall and into the liver, leading to liver damage.
