Welcome to our Information & Computer Sciences (ICS) Newsletter.
 
This newsletter will serve as a place to inform undergraduate students, faculty and staff about upcoming events and opportunities within the ICS Department and the greater community. The newsletter will also highlight research projects as well as outstanding students and faculty in our department.

Summer 2022 Graduation Application  
 
Attention ICS students graduating in Summer 2022, the graduation application is now open with the deadline being May 28, 2022.

NOTE: Please check with an ICS Advisor to make sure you are ready to graduate before filling out the application. You may schedule  an advising appointment vis STAR Balance.
Upcoming Events & Opportunities
Virtual IT Career Fair (4/29) + Resume Workshop (4/21)
 
There will be a Virtual IT Career Fair on Tuesday, April 29 from 10am-1pm. If you are interested in attending the career fair, please see attachment on how to register or click here

There will also be a Resume Writing Workshop on April 21, 2022 10am-11pm to prepare for the career fair or for those who would like to improve their Resumes. You may register for the Resume Work shop here.
 

Hacking For Defense
Information Session

Hacking for Defense or H4D is a 3-credit course that teaches Lean Start Up Methodology. Learn to be an effective and innovative leader by working in a multidisciplinary team. In this Information Session, H4D instructor, Jeff Hui, and DoD sponsors will speak on problems they're hoping you can help them solve.

Information session will be held April 7, 2022 at 12pm. Register for the event here.

ICS 496 w/ Department of Defense Information Session 
 
The project sponsor is a DoD servicemember who will work with you towards a solution. You and your team will also have an ICS faculty advisor. Together, they work to make this a successful journey. Finally, this course offers an opportunity for a full time paid internship summer 2023.

Lunch & Learn w/ Captain Hutchison

You are cordially invited to join us on Friday, April 8th from 12:00 - 1:00 ON CAMPUS for a Lunch and Learn event with Capt. Hutchison of the US Pacific Fleet. Free lunch will be provided and this is an event well worth your time. See attached for the event flyer as well as background on Capt. Hutchison, who is a proud CoE alumnus.

Topics covered will include:
  • Background on the complex INDO-Pacific Security Environment we live in today, touching on the U.S. Pacific Fleet's full range of Naval operations and engagements.  
  • His background in Hawaii and military career over 26 years as a Surface Warfare officer and then his transition to the Civil Engineer Corps.
  • Discuss an upcoming large project constructing a new dry dock at Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard and the program called the Shipyard Infrastructure & Optimization Plan (SIOP).  
  • The importance of networking early (NOW as a student) and positive aspects of joining an engineering society, such as ASCE or SAME.
  • Hiring opportunities for engineering students in the DoD sector in Hawaii or abroad. 
  • Time for Q&As.

Reality Bytes
In partnership with the U.S. Navy, the National Security Innovation Network is recruiting participants for the Reality Bytes Hackathon with $45,000 in prizes on the line!  For this event, we are looking for creative solutions using data visualization, AR/VR, and gamification principles to help create a heads-up display for cyber professionals. Cyber professionals are flooded with data, so tools that can improve their focus and help them identify urgent priorities are essential to protect critical infrastructure. 
 
If you or any fellow students have a creative solution that can help tackle any of the problem areas included below, please sign up!

Participants can join as a complete team or join as an individual. This hackathon is open to undergraduate, graduate, and Ph.D. students as well as early-stage startups.

Scholarship Opportunities
ICS Scholarship Opportunities for AY 2022-2023

The deadline for the four ICS scholarships for Academic Year (AY) 22-23 has been extended to April 15, 2022 by 11:59pm HST. The scholarships will be awarded through a common application, therefore, if you apply for one then your name will also be considered for the other ICS scholarships.

3) W. Wesley and Hiromi Peterson Student Support Endowment
4) Business Solution Technologies Scholarship Excellence 

Students may apply via the 
STAR Scholarship website.  Scholarships for AY 21-22 have been recently awarded. Congratulations to the recipients.
