G21 HWB PILLAR UPDATE - APRIL 2022
DIRECTOR'S UPDATE

Welcome to our April 2022 edition of the G21 Health and Wellbeing Pillar Newsletter.
The G21 Primary Care Partnership(PCP) is currently in transition to the Local Public Health Units(LPHUs) at Barwon Health, with an extension until June 30. This move will centralise the established PCPs across the state at LPHUs with consistent governance arrangements and the ability to continue the high value functions of PCPs in implementing preventative health measures and addressing preventable health issues in our community. G21 will continue to play a pivotal role in the health and wellbeing of the G21 community through the G21 HWB Pillar.

Women with disabilities experience multiple barriers to accessing health services. The Experts in Our Health training supports organisations to improve accessibility and implement inclusive co-design of services and programs. Training participants will learn about barriers, and engage in facilitated discussion about practices that uphold rights and support access. For more information please find contact details on the G21 website.

The G21 Stakeholder Forum was held at the RACV Resort last Friday, April 1, 2022. You can find all the details about the esteemed speakers and panel members who engaged in discussion around the theme of Connected Communities and growing well on the G21 website.

Acknowledging the impact of isolation and impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, and ongoing concerns for the community if you or anyone you know requires assistance, please see these resources compiled by the Give Where You Live Foundation for the G21 Region:
https://www.givewhereyoulive.com.au/2021/05/lockdown-emergency-assistance/

The G21 Region Social Housing Project continues, Plans have been developed for 2022.  We also envisage a regional Housing forum for 2022, focusing on innovation.

The “local and vocal” forums held in Dec 2020 for the G21 region, have now rolled out across the state thanks to DFFH. The approach was to  co-design with young people a place to prioiritise their needs and well mental health. More information can be found on the G21 website under Health and Wellbeing.

The “Growing Up in G21” project is completed. The online version can be found here: https://g21.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/Growing-up-in-G21.pdf The document is already assisting in the creation of shared metrics and to monitor change in the delivery of early years services across the G21 region, as well as an established foundation of data for Municipal Early Years Plans.

Our website is updated daily with links around the latest COVID-19 advice and updates from DH, as well as comprehensive links around mental health and wellbeing, how to prevent infection and spread, and emergency relief and links to support for those experiencing financial distress.

The G21 HWB Team look forward to prioritising the health and wellbeing of the G21 Community and continuing to work collaboratively, as we progress through the current COVID 19 environment.
Stay safe and get your COVID-19 vaccination and booster.

IN APRIL THE G21 HWB PILLAR SUPPORTS
SEXUAL ASSAUL AWAREMENESS MONTH

April is Sexual Assault Awareness month which aims to raise awareness about sexual assault and educate our community on how we can all play a part in prevention. This year’s theme is ‘Building Safe Online Spaces Together’.

Now more than ever, screens and technology connect us with friends and family, co-workers, intimate partners, and strangers alike. For too long, harassment, cyberbullying, sexual abuse, and exploitation have come to be expected as typical and unavoidable behaviors online. The United Nations reports that 73% of women online have been exposed to online abuse and that women are 27 times more likely to experience online harassment than men. Building Safe Online Spaces Together is possible when we promote online communities that value respect, inclusion, and safety.

Sexual assault is a serious and widespread problem. In Australia, since the age of 15, approx. 1 in 6 women and 1 in 25 men have experienced sexual violence across their lifetime, approx. 1 in 2 women and 1 in 4 men have experienced sexual harassment. Approximately 1 in 6 boys and 1 in 4 girls are sexually abused before the age of 18 (Personal Safety Survey 2016 (ABS, 2017).

At a local level, The Sexual Assault & Family Violence Centre (The SAFV Centre) strive for a community free from family violence and sexual assault, and a society underpinned by the principles of gender equality, social justice and human rights. Through training and education, advocacy and primary prevention, their initiatives aim to combat the issues of power, inequality and disrespect and encourage safe, healthy and respectful relationships.

The SAFV Centre provides tailored evidence and trauma-informed training programs for the workplaces, professionals and community to recognise and respond to disclosures, strengthen capability in working with people impacted by trauma, building an understanding of vicarious trauma to resilience, and addressing and preventing sexual harassment in the workplace.
