APRIL 2022

NEWSLETTER

Dear <<First Name>>,

Internationally, April is stress awareness month, with the goal of raising public awareness about stress, its causes and effects, including the effects it has on the human mind, body and spirit. This year, amid the erosion of mental health due to ongoing uncertainty and rapid change, it seems particularly important to keep raising awareness of the causes and cures for the world’s current stress epidemic. EAPASA and its members are pivotal in this role in South Africa.

In the April newsletter we bring you an article that examined Generation Z as tomorrow’s workforce. We also take a look at how employers can create a mentally healthy workplace.

We take a look at fostering spirituality in the workplace and also take a look at ways of supporting employees who are going through a divorce.

As always, we enjoy hearing from you, please get in touch with inputs on how we can improve this important resource, your Newsletter!

Tomorrow’s Workforce How Will Generation Z Handle Launching Their Careers in the Next Normal?

While a lot has been articulated in the last 18 months about older people at risk from COVID-19, Generation Z, the younger generation born between the late 1990s and the early 2010s, also saw their world shaken in 2020 due to the pandemic. From being subjected to school shutdowns and quarantining to social distancing and high unemployment, Gen Z as a current and near-future workforce is coming of age in the middle of far-reaching socio-economic turmoil. >>>

How Can Employers Create a Mentally Healthier Workplace?

What is a healthy workplace? According to the World Health Organisation (WHO 2009), a healthy workplace is one where, “workers and managers collaborate to continually improve the health, safety and wellbeing of all workers and by doing this, sustain the productivity of the business”. As a consequence, mentally healthy workplaces are ones where employees enjoy participating, and where managers and fellow employees are open to each other’s needs, being flexible and supportive of each other. >>>

Fostering the Expression of Spirituality in the Workplace

It makes sense that people want to incorporate the same ideals and beliefs that they apply to their private life to their work life; and spiritual or religious beliefs can profoundly affect how employees do their jobs.  When an employee finds they are surrounded by colleagues who do not share their values or beliefs, they may feel compelled to keep their beliefs under wraps – for a number of reasons. And, it could be that religious identity in the workplace is neglected as a workplace diversity issue, making it prone to tension and conflict. >>>

Supporting Employees Going Through a Divorce

Psychological, social and financial problems caused by the COVID-19 pandemic have left many South African marriages broken beyond repair, with the result that the number of divorce cases has escalated since March 2020. International research studies have found a causal link between lower productivity and divorce issues that can stretch into months and years. The effects of divorce are also known to elevate stress and anxiety levels that can lead to poor health and increased healthcare costs both for the employee and the organisation. >>>
