Just Announced: Medicine Singers debut album (Digital - 7/1, Physical - 10/21)

We've been waiting for years to tell the world about this project... the debut LP from Medicine Singers.

First hinted at during last month's unveiling of Yonatan Gat and Stone Tapes2022 Artist in ResidenceMedicine Singers' debut album expands on over 5 years of collaboration between Eastern Algonquin powwow group Eastern Medicine Singers and guitarist Yonatan Gat. Rounded out by contributions from Ryan Olson of Gayngs, rising jazz trumpet star jaimie branch, Thor Harris and Christopher Pravdica of Swans, no wave icon Ikue Mori, and ambient music pioneer Laraaji, the music of Medicine Singers is a genre-smashing kaleidoscope of sound firmly rooted in the intense physical power of the powwow drum. The group draws on their connection to ancestral music, to create a daring and ambitious body of work that celebrates tradition, while boldly breaking away from its restrictions.

In the words of Medicine Singers’ leader Daryl Black Eagle Jamieson: “These two cultures can work together, and blend together. We created something that needs to be out there in the world, to show people how we can work together and make something beautiful.”

Every party that has helped shaped this record confronted the idea of the antiquated term "world music" for anything that doesn't fit into the lens of contemporary western music. To think of this particular fusion of native music and advanced production techniques as "world music" would constitute an abject failure to recognize both the ingenuity and power of what has been achieved here.

The lead single from Medicine Singers' debut is “Daybreak,” a glitchy and propulsive track sung in the Massachusetts dialect of the Eastern Algonquin - a language with less than ten fluent speakers remaining. The song is accompanied by a lyric video that uses psychedelic visuals as a tool to preserve a Native language on the verge of extinction.

“Right now, there are less than ten people in the world who speak [the Eastern Algonquin dialect], but maybe this new recording can change that,” explains bandleader Daryl Black Eagle Jamieson of "Daybreak". “The people of the Pokanoket are the people of the first light - we see the light first - we are the guardians of the first gates. It's a tradition for us to do these prayers in the morning to thank the creator for life. It's a very important song, and I gave it to my tribe, the Pocasset Tribe of the Pokanoket Nation. It's important to keep these songs and pass them down to the generations - that's why we want to show the words, to help people know that this language is still out there and some people are still speaking it."

CHECK OUT THE SOFT-DROPPED TRACK: SANCTUARY

At this point, or soon, you may come to ask yourself: "if Daybreak is the lead single for this record, why is there another track on streaming services?"

Well, the answer is quite simple, we soft-dropped "Sanctuary" back in January so that we could start establishing streaming profiles for Medicine Singers. You know, the convoluted streaming overlords logistical stuff.

So get a double dose of Medicine Singers this week, and check out "Sanctuary"!
