Welcome to this week's Caloundra Catholic Parish eNewsletter
Archbishop Mark has a message for you
There’s a lot of ugliness in the world – the ugliness of war, of child abuse, of family violence, of human trafficking and so the list could go on. In such a world, beauty is more than decoration or evasion. It’s not an escape from ugliness but a way of seeing beyond the ugliness to the beauty at the heart of all things. The death of Jesus was a very ugly affair, but many of our crosses and crucifixes are beautiful. This isn’t a denial of the ugliness of what happened but a vision of the beauty of self-sacrificing love at the heart of the crucifixion. Art is always important in the world we know. It’s powerful and necessary because it gives meaning to a world which can seem meaningless, beauty to a world which can seem relentlessly ugly. The Russian novelist Dostoyevsky wrote that “beauty will save the world”. He meant the beauty of love, which is at the heart of Easter for which we are preparing through these days of Lent.
