Natural Areas Conservation

Project Update

Things are starting to “spring” up: We did some very exciting work at the Tyee Spit, mid-November, planting more than 500 deltoid balsamroot seedlings! This endangered plant is found in very few areas, but historically lives at our local spit! We planted more than 700 seeds over this winter, so we hope to plant even more seedlings out this upcoming fall.

In other news, Purple Martins will be making their way to Campbell River [and beyond] soon. Before they do so, we are in the process of making their posts in the estuary the best they can be! These new poles allow for the appropriate staff and volunteers to safely access the nests of the purple martins via a pulley system, so that the babies can be properly assessed. This means no more standing on ladders in estuary mud!

More birdy insights

Our regular Canada goose monitoring will continue to take place in the estuary this summer. Non-native resident Canada geese have significant impacts on estuary vegetation, and we continue to monitor this by surveying vegetation in our experimental plots, including our exclosures (fenced areas that keep the geese out). We will also be counting geese weekly during the main moulting season this summer, which is when we have our highest population counts during the year.

Do you need tools?

Have you heard about Greenways’ Stewardship Resource Centre? This program is essentially a tool-lending library designed to assist you with your independent environmental stewardship work! This centre provides a “one-stop-shop” for tools and specialist equipment required for environmental projects in Campbell River, including but not limited to: shovels, loppers, gloves, rakes, water quality test kits, and gee traps! We are so happy to be able to provide support to environmental stewards via local expertise, as well as the necessary equipment to have a net positive impact on your local ecosystems.

Email our Community Engagement Coordinator, Katie, to find out more at katharine@greenwaystrust.ca

Thank you for your support!

We acknowledge the financial support of the Province of British Columbia for these programs.

Rehabilitation of the Campbell River Estuary

ElderCollege

An interpretive walk organized by the NIC ElderCollege | May 4 | 10-11.30am | led by Cynthia Bendickson.

"Over the last half of a century, the estuary has gone through significant change. Industries came and went. The landscape was modified over decades to serve industrial needs. Now nature is taking back over the estuary. Together with various organizations, and its fantastic volunteers, Greenways is working on the on-going restoration. Cynthia, the Executive Director of Greenways Land Trust, will give you a walking tour of the Estuary and fill you in on the details of the plan, and the importance of this work. Wear sturdy shoes and dress for the weather."

21st Annual
Broom Bash

Save The Date: May 14

Back after a 2-year break: Greenways' is inviting you along on Saturday, May 14, from 10am until 12/noon on the Myrt Thompson Trail in the Campbell River estuary to clip invasive Scotch broom while it's in bloom. By removing broom we are making space for the native vegetation to thrive & flourish, turning the area back into its natural state.

Thank You

Centre for Inspired Living

Thank you to the Centre for Inspired Living for their wonderful and generous $10,000 gift - Greenways is grateful for the support! Through this donation we will be able to fund some of our key administrative operations, and cover general expenses for office rent, internet, phone, hydro and many more aspects to running a non-profit that our project funding does not often cover.
Our donors truly make the difference for us, and we are extremely thankful!

Temporary Trail Closure

Rail Trail / Beaver Lodge

Heads up to all Beaver Lodge Lands users: The Rail Trail will be closed April 5th-6th so that the bridge may be repaired! What a perfect reason to take the scenic route (although in the Beaver Lodge, what ISN'T a scenic route!?).

Detour signs will be posted at all entrances, including maps! Thank you for your patience while we fix this issue.

Shout out to the Ministry, Rotary, and the Beaver Lodge Trust Society for all their help in fixing this issue.
