New study - Effects of ivermectin treatment of backyard chickens on mosquito dynamics and West Nile virus transmission

Current mosquito control strategies to prevent pathogen transmission to humans have limited ability to selectively target bird-biting mosquitoes involved in amplification and spillover transmission of pathogens like West Nile virus (WNV). Ivermectin (IVM) provides a potential alternative for control by killing mosquitoes that bloodfeed on IVM-treated birds. Therefore, IVM treatment of avian species that account for the majority of mosquito bloodmeals during the WNV transmission season could be an effective strategy for targeted mosquito and WNV control in residential neighborhoods. Building on pilot studies indicating the efficacy and feasibility of IVM-deployment for WNV control, Dr. Karen Holcomb, Dr. Chris Barker, and collaborators at UC Davis and Colorado State University performed a randomized field trial to investigate the impact of IVM-treatment of backyard chickens on local population dynamics of Culex mosquitoes and WNV transmission. They were able to link changes in mosquito populations to reduction in WNV transmission, as measured by chicken seroconversions, through IVM-induced mortality in mosquitoes. However, further work is needed to identify the impact of treatment on mosquito abundance and infection prevalence to fully attribute observed changes to IVM administration. Overall, the results support IVM treatment as a potentially effective addition to conventional vector control strategies and one that can be used to target WNV transmission at fine scales of residential neighborhoods [publication].

Now hiring for Assistant Professor (Mosquito Biologist/Ecologist)

The Department of Entomology at the University of California invites applicants for an Assistant Professor to develop an innovative, field-oriented, research program on the population dynamics and community ecology of mosquitoes. This is a 9-month, tenure-track position. The position will be available July 1, 2022. Research should focus on mosquito population biology and ecology, and include studying aquatic habitats in urban, agricultural and natural areas. Research may also include studies on the epidemiology of mosquito-transmitted pathogens of humans. The Department seeks an individual who will complement existing expertise in medical entomology and vector biology, and who can work collaboratively with faculty across academic departments, colleges and UC campuses. Collaborative research efforts with vector control districts, state and county public health agencies or international health agencies are also strongly encouraged. Teaching responsibilities may include participation in aquatic entomology, vector biology and ecology, and medical/veterinary entomology courses, as well as supervision of graduate students.

Pilot Testers Wanted: CDC NCEZID Online Tick-borne Illnesses Modules

CDC’s National Center for Emerging and Zoonotic Infectious Diseases (NCEZID) is seeking health professionals to conduct pilot testing for one of two online trainings which aim to provide science-based information about either (1) tickborne arboviral disease, or (2) anaplasmosis or ehrlichiosis. Both courses will last approximately 45 – 60 minutes. Pilot testers will receive continuing education credits once the training is launched. These trainings cannot be accredited without pilot testing. Your participation helps ensure that continuing education credits are available to health professionals who take these trainings in the future – thank you! Click here to begin.

Support CDC's development of new tick surveillance tools!

The Rickettsial Zoonoses Branch at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is partnering with various national and international universities and public health agencies to develop a robust, protein-based platform for identification and characterization of tick species of medical and veterinary importance, with applications for surveillance and scientific activities in the United States and other countries in the Western Hemisphere. Thanks to all who have provided ticks so far! We are currently seeking additional collaborators to provide recently collected (2018 - present), field-caught specimens of Amblyomma americanum, Amblyomma maculatum, Dermacentor variabilis, Dermacentor andersoni, Dermacentor occidentalis, and Ixodes scapularis. We are requesting samples of all feeding life stages of these species from various US locations for subsequent analysis by MALDI-TOF.

Desired specimens should be preserved in 70-95% ethanol and stored at room temperature since the time of collection. Ideally, at least 10 specimens from each geographical location are requested.

If you have questions or can assist with this project please contact Maria Galletti (
myu8@cdc.gov), Joy Hecht (ynw5@cdc.gov) or Chris Paddock (cdp9@cdc.gov) for more information.
