Praying for Russians | Holy Week Worship | Toward Justice and Right Relations

Last Saturday, I (Greg) was asked to prayer for Russians.
In almost any circumstance, that wouldn't be a problem. I'd be delighted to prayer for Russians, and anyone for that matter.
But this time was different. It was part of a community prayer service at the Elora Cenotaph. Clergy from different Christians congregations in Centre Wellington were joining together to offer this. Each of us was given a particular group of people to focus on: those trapped and sheltering, those injured, people grieving, people in the besieged city of Mariupol, refugees and the nations that are welcoming them, children, and, of course, an end to this disgusting war. And I was given the job of praying for Russians. Yes, the nation doing the invading and which, as far as can be known, largely supports this atrocity.
I realized how relatively easy this would be for me to do. But what if the town square I'd be standing in was being targetted by shells, and the beautiful buildings of historic Elora were laid to waste, and I had just been leading the burial prayers for my neighbours interred in hastily-dug trenches? Could I pray for those who are unleashing such evil?
It just so happened that the day before, I was listening to an interview with Fyodor Raychynets. He is a pastor and and theologian in Kyiv. Fyodor is spending his days from dawn to curfew feeding the elderly, the sick, weary soldiers, and women and children stuck in the basements without electricity, without clean water, without medication, and increasingly, without a clear idea of how any of this will end for them. He is praying with them, leading them in worship, and comforting them in their sorrow and fear. (You can listen to the interview by clicking here. And here is an article based on the interview.)

Saturday morning, I decided to find Pastor Ryachynets. I knew he was on Facebook. Every day since the war began, he has been posting about his experiences. He shares powerful photos and artwork. And he offers a prayer. (Find him on Facebook by clicking here.)
So I "friended" him. Almost immediately he accepted. After introducing myself, I told him what we would be doing that morning. I asked him what we should pray . . . for Russians.
He said, “Pray for awakening.”
So here is my prayer.

God, as we pray, help us to pray with our brother in Christ, Fyodor.
You make the sun rise on both the evil and the good. You sends rain on both the righteous and the unrighteous. You command us to act with love toward enemies, and pray for those who do evil.
Help us to pray.
God, You give sight to those whose vision is impaired. You wake up those who drift in sleeps of lies and deception. Wake them up. Make them see. Fight through the lies people are being fed. Expose evil, when it is disguised as good. Expose war, when it is deceptively rebranded as "peacemaking." Expose weakness, when it masquerades as strength.
God, we pray for those Russians who are bravely telling the truth. Those who are protesting. Protect them. Amplify their voices. Break through the fog of propaganda and manipulation.
It is so hard to hear ugly truths about ourselves, about our people, about our beloved country. We know this in our own ways. So give Russians (and us in Canada) the courage to hear these hard things. To hear and then to tell the truth . . . of wrongs done, of pain caused, of sins committed. Give them and us the courage to face what is wrong within us, and to turn to new ways . . . to Your way of truth, and life, and love.
Foil the tyrants who try to silence them; thwart their schemes. Break their power.
God of justice and peace, imprison the powers of war and hatred. Bind those who are addicted to hatred and domination. Expose the lies of nationalisms of hatred and insecurity. Still the mouths of those who order this war. Heap burning coals of Your goodness and truth on their heads. Burn away the evil in them. Set them free.
Set us all free, we pray.
We pray for Pastor Fyodor Raychynets and his people, as their bear witness to you today. Keep them safe. Bless those whom they serve. Sustain their hope. Hold their tears. Give them courage. Receive their offering, and shine Your glory through them.
In the name of Jesus Christ, in whose broken Body the world’s sin is carried, and whom we are made right by Your grace, we pray. Amen.

Acknowledgment of Indigenous Territory
A practical workshop for individuals and congregations
We're look at bringing 3 congregations--Alma UC, Bethany UC, Elora UC--into one. This is a good time to look again at how we regularly remember that we are living and worshiping on Indigenous land.
Greg will be taking part and looks forward to learning along with others from our congregations.

The Blanket Exercise
Canada's stories from Indigenous Perspectives
The KAIROS Blanket Exercise is an experiential workshop that explores the nation-to-nation relationship between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples in Canada. Blankets arranged on the floor represent land and participants are invited to step into the roles of First Nations, Inuit and later Métis peoples.
We'd like to offer the Blanket Exercise in Centre Wellington. Interested in being part of the team? Please connect with Greg asap.
