This week on Podcasting, Seriously Live on Twitter Spaces, we welcomed Paulina Velasco, LWC Studios’ managing producer, to discuss editing an interview for podcasts vs radio. Paulina has experience across several podcasts and public radio programs and has filed stories for KCRW, Marketplace, and The Guardian, among others. Some takeaways are:
- Podcast listeners curate their own experience in a way that they don't get to do when listening to radio. When you tune into a radio station, you only hear what the station is airing at that time. This makes podcasting a more personal medium.
- You have more responsibility when you're editing for a podcast than for radio. "I feel you have more responsibility to your listener. Podcasts live longer. Podcasts exist forever. Once radio segments air, it's kind of over. Podcasts also give you more creativity and flexibility, which also comes aside as responsibility," she says.
- Podcast listeners are far more diverse than radio audiences, which is something that podcasters need to take into consideration when creating content and editing their show.
- The 'shelf life' for podcasts are much longer, which allows podcast interviews to be deeper than in radio. When booking guest for podcasts, there's more freedom to invite people who are more opinionated because you have more room to prepare. "You can prepare for it more because you don't have a seven minute time slot in the radio hour clock that you need to fill. You can make it as long as you want," Paulina mentions.
