Mental Health Europe (MHE) is delighted to invite you to celebrate the third edition of the European Mental Health Week, which will run from 9 May until 13 May 2022. The theme "Speak up for mental health" will shine the spotlight on youth mental health as a high-profile societal issue now and in the foreseeable future. The time for action is now to show that youth mental health matters.

Mental health in times of armed conflicts and global crisis

MHE has released a new web page gathering resources for some of the significant mental health challenges being faced by Ukrainians (those in the country and in exile), especially children and young people, and those who are supporting them. MHE is working closely with its members, the European Commission, the WHO, and others to monitor and address the mental health challenges being faced by Ukrainians as well as tips on how to handle the trauma of war from afar.

On 14-15 March, MHE Director Claudia Marinetti spoke on “mental health of vulnerable young people” highlighting the situation and the needs related to the mental health of vulnerable young people in the EU27, and on concrete and priority actions to address these needs.

Ukraine conflict: MHE Roundtable of 25 March

MHE held a Roundtable with members on 25 March to gather information about the mental health challenges being faced by people fleeing Ukraine (as well as those remaining or unable to leave the country), and those supporting them in the neighbouring countries and throughout Europe. Members exchanged about the best way of addressing the needs for mental health and psychosocial services.

MHE took part in the initial discussion concerning the second EU review by the UN CRPD Committee
 
MHE’s alternative report on the UN CRPD implementation by the EU was produced in cooperation with its members' experts on mental health and human rights. It sheds a light on the needs and challenges faced by people with psychosocial disabilities and mental health problems in Europe.

The Scorecard measures the performance of the Slovenian Presidency of the Council of the European Union (July – December 2021) in relation to mental health and the human rights of persons with psychosocial disabilities.

WHO Europe 

In response to the war in Ukraine and the humanitarian crisis, WHO Europe advocates for a renewed public health approach for migrants' wellbeing to meet the urgent needs of refugees' health, mental health and psychosocial support.

EEG

In response to the ongoing war in Ukraine, members of the Expert Group on the Transition from Institutional to Community-based Care (EEG) have taken several initiatives not to leave behind and expose to further risks to people in need of support. These include initiatives to support children, people with disabilities, homeless people and people experiencing mental health problems in Ukraine.

WHO Europe

WHO Europe recently connected over 150 mental health representatives from over half of the WHO European Region’s 53 Member States to ignite action on mental health. MHE’s Director Claudia Marinetti was invited to speak at this 2-day consultation working towards comprehensive reform of the Region’s mental health systems.

WHO Europe

The European Health Report by WHO Europe takes stock of the progress on Sustainable Development Goals health indicators. The report shows that the pandemic had an unprecedented impact on mental health, with the lowest levels in specific groups such as women and young people.

WHO Europe and the Government of Greece launched a new child and adolescent mental health programme. WHO Europe will continue to work with countries across the Region to strengthen and improve the quality of mental health services for children and adolescents.

EU Alliance for Investing in Childen  

The EU Alliance for Investing in Children, of which MHE is part,  released a statement to demand the immediate attention of all EU member states to the delays in submitting national action plans and offer key recommendations on the Child Guarantee and its upcoming implementation.

The European Parliament   

Marking International Women’s Day 2022. the European Parliament started discussing the disproportionate effects that the pandemic had on women, who ultimately faced more unpaid care work, violence and worsened mental health as a consequence of lockdowns and curfews.

CoReMH 

The first international study conducted as part of the Consortium on Refugees' and Migrants' Mental Health (CoReMH) work has been published. The study deals with mental health in the transit context, and questions whether MHPSS interventions should be rethought and adjusted in accordance with different characteristics of the transit-specific characteristics.

Human Rights Watch

Human Rights Watch released a report focusing on mental health implications for Afghans who were evacuated to France over the past months and the challenges in finding psychosocial support services. It includes some lessons learned concerning the provision of psychosocial support for people seeking protection.

European Public Health Alliance (EPHA) calls on the international community, the EU, and member states to protect the physical and mental health of all people affected by the crisis in Ukraine.

Skin - mental health platform 
“Skin - mental health platform”, Bulgaria, started a free mental health support campaign for the people directly affected by the war in Ukraine. The foundation launched a centralised platform for consultation requests in Ukrainian, English and Bulgarian.

Public Health Scotland has established a Mental Health Indicators project to make relevant data more accessible to local and national users. These outputs support the use of data to improve population mental health.
