Happy April! My heart goes out to the journalists today who have to investigate/write about all the dumb stuff people send them. (I did like the idea of a 7-cent "Tiny Gulp," though.)
11 things to tell ya:
1. As you can see above, I'll be at St. Mark's Comics in Brooklyn on April 9. Come say hi, buy a minicomic, swap pants, etc. etc. It'll be fun!
2. I dug THE WORST PERSON IN THE WORLD, which lost the Oscar but has an ETERNAL SUNSHINE vibe that made me wish I were 10-15 years younger. Rent it and let the love/tears flow.
3. Howard Kremer's "Drop Date Duels" on Patreon are worth throwing him a few bucks. Each week he pits two artists against each other with tracks from their brand new releases. Recent battles include Machine Gun Kelly vs. Weezer, Eddie Vedder vs. Spoon and Bryan Adams vs. Dolly Parton.
4. I'm watching MINX and trying to predict what happens in the season finale. (It takes place in 1971, so I assume at least one character will have a one-night stand with Burt Reynolds, right?)
5. Love the new Arcade Fire song, especially about halfway through when it sounds like an old Arcade Fire song.
6. Tracy Morgan got me all emotional when he told Conan he relearned how to walk the day his daughter took her first steps.
7. On Saturday (tomorrow) I'll be walking around at the MoCCA Arts Festival. Can't wait to see old pals, but I'll admit I still have a weird time going to these events as an attendee and not a reporter! I still scribble many notes.
8. Ethan Hawke stars in a new Audible crime drama called FISHPRIEST, and if you dare to say that three times, you better watch your back.
10. Longtime reader Shane B. sent me a mix of songs he used to hear/play in clubs back in the '80s. Put it on if you're a fan of Depeche Mode, Siouxsie, etc. Thanks, Shane!
"OTTO" is a new graphic novel by Jon Agee that is told entirely through palindromes! Here's one of my favorite pages that features characters like "Rex, Alert Relaxer" and "Poor Dana Droop." (Of course, my all-time fave palindrome remains "Sit on a potato pan, Otis.")
Attention, comics artists!Dean Haspiel and I are co-jurors of an exciting comics-themed exhibition at Brooklyn's 440 Gallery. Apply here before May 10, and spread the word!
And I'm off like a dirty mask -- see ya soon, and holler at whitmath@gmail.com orby reaching through my TV screen.
