Loreto Highlights Update - 01st April 2022
Keyboard workshop
Last Friday, Yr. 6 children were taken on a trip to the Holy Trinity Cathedral for a key-board workshop given by the Cathedral organist, Michael Stevenson.
Michael is an award- winning and very experienced musician, who has been director of music at several schools, including the renowned King’s College Choir school in Cambridge. He has given recitals at various prominent churches such as St. Paul’s Cathedral, Southwark Cathedral and Westminster’s Abbey, and has wide experience of working with schools.
The children were absolutely enthralled by the session which focused on three instruments: the piano, the organ and the harpsichord. Michael explained about these instruments through music and children were able to examine how they worked. The Cathedral’s organ is one of two remaining of the type in the world, built in 1880 by a London firm of organ builders, Bryceson & Ellis, children experienced the splendour of its sound and examined the structure of the piece. Michael’s talent captivated and inspired them leaving them thirsty for more! It was an instructive and enriching afternoon enjoyed by all.  Next event: Informal Concert with Michael Stevenson, 13th May 2022. Click here to register
Welcome Back Father Gavin
On Monday this week we welcomed back Father Gavin.  He led  assembly for our Year 5 and 6 pupils.  Following this, he popped in to greet the Year 4 pupils. He played a game with them which they thoroughly enjoyed and they reflected on a passage from the bible.

Preparation for Confirmations
Some of our Yr. 6 pupils have been preparing to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation. Children have completed formation lessons instructing them on major theological concepts, the life of Saints, the Gifts of the Holy Spirit, and the responsibilities of a Catholic within the church. They attended a Holy Hour with Fr Paul in the school chapel, where they spent time in adoration of the Most Blessed Sacrament. This week, Confirmands received the healing grace of the Sacrament of Confession and are now all set to affirm their faith in Christ and receive the Gifts of the Holy Spirit. The journey has been a transformative and positive experience which we hope they will carry with them for the rest of their lives. We wish them all the very best in their Confirmations next week.
Faith Diary
This Sunday’s Gospel tells the story of the woman caught in adultery, which under Mosaic Law, would mean that she stood condemned to death by stoning. Instead of challenging or even defending the woman, Jesus invites any of her accusers who is ‘without sin’ to throw the first stone. Inevitably, the crowd of accusers melts away, and Jesus is left alone with the woman. He does not attempt to question or judge her, but having saved her life, simply urges her to ‘go and sin no more’. His response is more than a caution to us about passing judgment on other, it is a profound lesson in divine mercy and forgiveness. As sinners, we are all unworthy to judge the sins of others as we too should stand convicted by God’s law for our transgressions. Yet Jesus, who is without sin, offers all of us sinners not harsh judgment but eternal mercy and forgiveness.  Saved by his loving compassion, we, like the woman, are urged to convert, to change our way of life and to ’sin no more’.
Year 3 Literacy
As part of the Literacy curriculum Year 3 have been learning about synonyms. (a word or phrase that means exactly or nearly the same as another word or phrase in the same language.)  The pupils had fun looking at excerpts from the BFG by Roald Dahl, brainstorming how words could be changed.
Crafting With Parents
This week our Year 1 pupils were joined by a Family member to participate in a craft task.  Mrs Yome, Mrs Bruzon, Miss Sene & Miss Gill organised an great activity, the pupils cut out a heart, writing a thank you message, then decorated the heart with their family member.  Everyone enjoyed a lovely morning, finishing with a song about Spring.
Jurassic Explorations
Our Foundation Stage 2 class were surprised on Monday morning to see that the Dinosaurs had visited their classroom over the weekend. The pupils became explorers for the day, they used wooden tools to crack open frozen eggs, brushes to dig in the sand for fossils and practised their writing in glitter trays. The explorers then wrote a report about their findings!
Gold Book
Well done to pupils in Lower Primary and Foundation Stage 2 who were presented with their Gold Award certificates and gold pencils.
Congratulations to pupils of Prior Park School Gibraltar on their production of Oliver.
Lionel Bart’s adaptation of the famous musical featured all the well-known songs, which were delivered with gusto and great panache! The lead characters had tremendous stage presence and the actors in supporting roles were well choreographed and brought great enjoyment to the stage. All credit goes to the crew and production team who brought this ambitious project together with little time to rehearse on stage.
I thoroughly enjoyed every minute! – A happy fan!
