Letter from Principal

April 7, 2022

Dear ISL Dixon Families

I hope all is well. I want to take this opportunity to remind everyone that our school will not be in session from Friday, Apr 15-Monday, Apr 18. This is not a whole week of Spring Break, and I urge you to make the most of this time with your children during this break. Your children have worked very hard and have learned many valuable life skills during the past months.

 Upcoming Events:

  • ISL DIXON ART-WALK: This year, we will be offering an Art Walk Through activity close to dismissal time in the last week of April. You and your child can walk together on the blacktop, looking at the artwork created by our students this academic year. Look for this information in our Campus TidBits.

Sun, Moon and Stars
By: Ms. Tutty (S1B)

Children love to make experiments with their family and enjoy showing what they

have learned. Right now in first grade, we are learning about the sun, moon and

stars. A great way to reinforce the comprehension of the subject matter, is

discussing what they have learned through their own observations, by sitting

outside during the day and at night and talking about what they see and think.

This way, they can connect real world observations with what they learned in

school. This is also a great way for the family to connect and learn from each

other.

In the coming weeks we will learn about sound and light. Ask your children to

share the experiments that we will be doing in school with you. Have a

conversation about it, and share your thoughts and observations.

TODAY is the LAST DAY TO VOTE!

We were pleasantly overwhelmed with the participation from our ISL students for this competition. We received a total of over 130 entries. A panel of judges assisted with selecting the Top 10 designs for your campus. From these Top 10, you will have a chance to vote for the ISL Dixon Campus T-Shirt Design Winner. Thank you to the students and staff who participated. We have so many creative students, it was tough to narrow down the submissions.

Voting Closes Thursday, April 7 at 11:59pm

To vote, click on the link below to view the submission and vote using the Google Form link provided. (Only one design must be selected for each vote)

A VISIT FROM SANDRA CISNEROS

Poet, short story writer, novelist, essayist, and performer

We will be honored with a special visit this April. Author Sandra Cisneros will visit with students at ISL who earlier this year had the chance to read her book “The House on Mango Street.” It is a pleasure and an honor to have Ms. Cisneros with us on this day. All families are invited to a special event at the Tulane Stone Center for Latin American studies on that evening. Please see the information below:

SPECIAL INVITATION FROM

THE STONE CENTER FOR LATIN AMERICAN STUDIES

TULANE UNIVERSITY

An Evening with Sandra Cisneros

Monday, April 11, 2022

6:00 PM – 7:00 PM CST
Lavin-Bernick Center, Kendall Cram Lecture Hall

Join us for an evening with award-winning author Sandra Cisneros. Cisneros will present selections from her recent publications, The House on Mango Street/La casa en Mango Street (translation; 2022) and Martita, I Remember You/Martita te recuerdo (2021).  The readings will be followed by a moderated conversation exploring topics of identity, race and gender.

Poet, short story writer, novelist, essayist, and performer, Cisneros has earned numerous awards including NEA fellowships in both poetry and fiction, a MacArthur Fellowship, the PEN America Literary Award, and the National Medal of Arts. More recently, she received the Ford Foundation's Art of Change Fellowship, the Fuller Award for Lifetime Achievement in Literature, and the PEN/Nabokov Award for Achievement in International Literature.

Published in 1984, Cisneros’s powerfully intimate story that centered the young Latinx voice and working-class experience of Esperanza Cordero made The House on Mango Street a modern classic that has become an essential coming of age text taught in elementary, high school, and universities across the United States. In her latest publication Martita, I Remember You/Martita te recuerdo, the author again meditates on the lives of women by exploring the transcendental friendships that serve to nourish us throughout our lives despite distance and time. In addition to her writing and other artistic endeavors, Cisneros has fostered the careers of many aspiring and emerging writers as the founder of two non-profit organizations: the Macondo Foundation and the Alfredo Cisneros del Moral Foundation.

The event, moderated by Associate Director of the Cuban and Caribbean Studies Institute, Professor I. Carolina Caballero, is part of our ongoing series of public engagement programs with Latinx writers exploring Latin America, race, and identity.

Sponsored by the Stone Center for Latin American Studies and the Newcomb Institute.

Mayor for a Day 2022

Please share this AMAZING opportunity with your child! We would love to see one of our ISL students serve as Mayor of New Orleans, again! We were so excited to see ISL represented in the 2019 Mayors. How wonderful would it be to have one of our very own students experience being Mayor for the Day in 2022.

The Office of Youth and Families launched the 2022 Mayor for a Day essay contest. This program aims to foster and encourage leadership in young people living in New Orleans. Applicants are invited to write essays about what they would do to make New Orleans better and how. Three winners will be chosen from three age categories. Each winner will be sworn in as Deputy Mayor and will have a chance to shadow the Mayor for the day. All youth, ages 11-18, who live in Orleans Parish are eligible to apply.
