April 2022

Greetings! Ready or not, April has arrived, and all of the wonderful things that go along with the ongoing transition to spring. Last week Perry told me he mowed his lawn already. What?! I haven’t even thought about mowing my lawn yet. What a guy! I should take note because his lawn looks amazing every year.

Every spring I always enjoy seeing signs of growth. Over the last week many blades of green grass have sprouted up here and there in my yard. The new growth reminds me of our life in Jesus—we are called to “grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ” (2 Peter 3:18)—and when we stay connected to Jesus we will “bear much fruit” to the Father’s glory (John 15). I’m excited about beginning a new month of ministry as a church family. I’d like to share a few highlights for the month ahead.

  • Make Room in Your Pew ~ Attendance at Sunday morning worship has been growing steadily over the last few months. In an effort to ensure that everyone has a seat, it would be helpful to “scootch in” to the middle section of the pews, leaving the ends open for people as they come in. If you want to get really radical in serving others, especially our first-time guests, please consider moving up to the open spaces in the front row pews!

  • Holy Week ~ Every year the Church commemorates Jesus’ suffering, sacrifice, and resurrection with special services. Please mark your calendars and be a part of our Palm Sunday worship (April 10th), Good Friday Service (April 15th), and Easter brunch & worship (April 17th). Please prayerfully consider inviting a friend, neighbor, or family member who doesn’t have a church home to attend with you.

  • New Sermon Series - We will be kicking off a new sermon series in Proverbs after Easter. Each week we’ll glean much needed wisdom for our lives from selected Proverbs. Please pray that God will speak to us and transform us through the preaching of His Word.

Please take a few minutes to read more about what’s happening at Monument in this month’s newsletter. I pray that we will grow closer to the Lord and to one another as we as we strive to fulfill our mission of “developing dedicated followers of Jesus Christ.”

I love you. Serve Him Well!

Pastor Jeff

A Note from Pastor Colby
We are having a wonderful time here as we continue to meet new people, grow in relationships with the students, and plan for the future of family ministries at Monument! In March, we continued our study of rooting our Identity in Christ during IGNITE Sunday night gatherings, and we are working through the book of John on Sunday mornings. In early March, 31 of us traveled to Rapid City for the TobyMac 'hits deep tour,' which was a blast!!

Looking forward, we have begun developing a youth worship team, and have started introducing worship at our IGNITE gatherings. The summer calendar is well underway, and we are neck-deep in summer camp promotions and are planning our very first (in my tenure) High School mission trip to the Black Hills in early June! The summer is gearing up to be a ton of fun with lots of opportunities for connection and deepening of relationships.

We are also gearing up to celebrate our graduating High School Seniors on May 15th! If you have a graduating senior in your home, please reach out to me with graduation information. Exciting things happening as we continue to move IGNITE forward!
New Bible Fellowship Classes
& Advanced Ministry Training

Beginning April 24th
(12-Week Session)
Sundays, 9:30 a.m. - 10:30 a.m.

Evangelism in the 21st Century
Eligible for Evangelical Training Association Credit
Contemporary evangelism is not really different--and yet extremely different--than any other time in history. The world of the first disciples was full of idolatry, political corruption, and gross immortality; much like our own culture. We must be bold, offer hope, be genuine, build relationships, and emphasize wholeness. Evangelism in the 21st Century will challenge your thinking and your heart, as you consider what evangelism looks like as you live your faith daily.

Understanding People
Eligible for Evangelical Training Association Credit
Whether you are a Bible teacher, AWANA leader, church worker, spouse, parent or grandparent, Understanding People can help you reach individual's more effectively as you interact with them on their level. Understanding the abilities at each age level will help you respond to people's needs -- creating an atmosphere of interest and eagerness to learn. Enhance your ministry skills, so you can be a more effective tool to be used in the lives of people.

Verse by Verse
Our Verse-by-Verse Study Group will be studying selections from the book of Judges. This group will be ongoing throughout the year. When one book is finished, it will start on another. This will be a group you can be part of at any time throughout the year. Let's mine the depths of God's word together!

Each month we highlight missionaries that Monument supports. Please take some time to learn more about them!  An encouraging email, phone call, or letter would surely be appreciated, too!

Community Christian School and KCMI Radio

Our missions focus for April is on two local Christian outreaches:  Community Christian School and KCMI.  Both of these organizations have been in our community for many years and have influenced many of our lives.  One simple way you can help either of these missions is by saving Main Street Market receipts and take them to their offices.  Co-op gives a donation for the money spent.

Community Christian School was founded in 1988 when a group of parents felt a school with a Bible-based curriculum was needed  in the Scottsbluff area.  They came together to purchase the former Bryant Elementary School located on 511 W 14th Street in Scottsbluff.   CCS is located in the same building today.

“At Community Christian, we genuinely love every student that walks through our doors.  We are a family that takes time to build strong relationships, nurturing our students from the inside out.  With an average class size of 14 students, our staff is able to personally connect with each child and develop their social and emotional well-being, while also differentiating instruction for a variety of learners.  Our focus is Biblical truth, ministering to individuals through daily Bible class, prayer throughout our day, service projects, and weekly chapels that include inviting area youth leaders to share God’s Word.  At CCS, we educate our students in all core academic areas.  We strive to not only prepare our students for their next step in education, but allow them to discover their God-given purpose in order to impact others for eternity.”

The mission statement for CCS is “Encouraging students to learn and apply God’s truth, while promoting academic excellence in a Christian environment.”

The Community Christian School Board meets on the third Monday of each month.  They are looking for new school board members.  Would you be willing to serve?  There are some changes coming next year.  Mike Clement has acquired some playground equipment which will be put in this summer.  A STEM class and Lego League will be added.  There will be a new language and spelling curriculum, and the social studies curriculum will be updated.

Many of our young children attend classes or are in child care at CCS.  Marci Thomalla manages the cafeteria each day, and Ernie Griffiths serves as parttime administrator.  Please pray for Community Christian School as they finish this school year, prepare for next year, and strive to point others to You.  If you would like to volunteer or learn more about CCS, contact them at 308-632-2230 or e-mail at office@ccsneb.com

Our second focus this month is on CMI (Christian Media Incorporated) which is located at 209 E 15th Street in Scottsbluff, NE.  At that location you will find KCMI, a 100,000 watt radio station, and the Cross Reference Library.

In October, 1977, Christian Media Incorporated was formed with the purpose of disseminating the Christian message to the public by electronic media.  KCMI went on-air on March 2, 1981, and has just celebrated its forty-first birthday.  Partnering with the local Christian community to reach the area with the gospel of Christ and to build up the body of Christ is what KCMI is all about.

Our own pastors, Pastor Jeff Banks and Pastor Jake Roberts, participate in some of the local programs including “Ask the Pastor” and “Prayer for the Nation.”   Russ Garrett, an elder at MBC, is KCMI’s General Manager and also host of the popular program the “Coffee Break.”  Gary Almquist is the Director of Sales and is host of another popular program that is aired on Sunday mornings.  It is “Hymntime Country Style” and has been a part of many of our lives for many years.  Hadassah Grubbs, one of our college age young adults, works with Cross Reference Library.   This library has several thousand titles.  A recent facelift of the area has given additional shelving for books, audio, and DVDs.  Be sure to stop in to check out material and enjoy the new contemporary look.

Other programs on KCMI, Hope Radio, are Wyo-Braska Worships, Christian Community Calendar and local worship services.  Not only is Hope Radio bringing the gospel and Christian broadcasting to our area, but also it is available around the world through a streaming signal.  Hope Radio is on Allo T. V. Channel 957 also.

Praises in a recent newsletter included that the FCC approved CMI’s license for another 8 years.  Another is that over 10,000+ visits to the website are occurring each month.  Local businesses and churches are displaying Hope Radio’s program guides which is a blessing.

Prayer requests include more opportunities to reach people with the Gospel of Christ, additional supporters and advertisers, and finances to replace the tube transmitter which is over 30 years old with a new solid state transmitter and also to be able to replace the antenna.

If you see Russ, Gary or Hattie at church,  be sure to tell them thank you for serving the Lord at our partner mission, KCMI.  Office hours at the CMI building are 9:00 am to 5:00 pm Monday through Friday.  You can reach them at 308-632-5264 or at www.kcmifm.com or info@kcmifm.com
