Advocacy

From WSPTA

Advocacy Submission Process Open

Any PTA member is encouraged to submit an issue, resolution, or legislative principle that addresses concerns that affect children on a state-wide level. As a grassroots association, we rely on our members to provide the priorities that we will advocate for at the state level and within our communities. Learn more about our legislative priorities here and the history of our advocacy efforts here.

At the 2022 Legislative Assembly, delegates will debate and vote on these submissions and whether to add them to our platform. This year is especially important as we will be voting on a new Top 5 to focus on over the next two years.

The submission process is now open. Please see complete instructions and deadlines for submitting at the bottom of the following pages:

Region 7
Greetings from New Region 7 Director
Thanks for all your patience as I’m getting up and running. My desk has spreadsheets and maps and sticky notes filled with notes and ideas, and I’m learning a lot about our Region and our various PTAs.

As we start to hear COVID case numbers going down and possibly mask mandates being eased, we are starting to see schools more open to volunteers and end-of-year activities returning, even if they are not exactly what’s been done in the past.  In fact, for many schools and PTAs, this continues to be a time when events and programs might be re-imagined.  As you've heard and in that same spirit, this year we can also look forward to the WSPTA Convention May 20-22 being in-person AND online!  This spring will be a great opportunity for all of our leaders to get reinvigorated with PTA passion!

For all of our Region 7 PTAs, I'll be hosting virtual (Zoom) Region 7 "Open Office Hours" from Noon-1:00 PM every other Wednesday. Our next Region 7 "Open Office Hours" will be on Wednesday, April 13. Please feel free to pop in for 5 minutes or for the whole hour. If that time doesn't work for you and you'd like to chat or Zoom with me, please just let me know and we'll schedule something. Details coming soon.

Thanks for all you do!
~Jen

From the Class of 2022 Parent Group

Grad Night Parent Volunteers Needed June 18th
Adult chaperones needed for the event-bus riders, security, help at venue, decorations, clean up etc. You don’t have to stay the whole night-we can work out shift. Chaperones do not have to be senior parents. Having non-senior parent volunteers able to help with set-up would be fantastic.

Does anyone have a family member or coworker that is a police officer in the area that would be willing to serve as our designated police attendant?
We are required to have a police officer present. The shift can be divided up. There will be a training session for all adult volunteers that will take place end of May or early June.

If you are able to help, please email us at jhs2022parents@gmail.com.

From the Counseling Center

We hope everyone can take some time to do what reenergizes them during our upcoming Spring Break!

Change can be hard, and our student have had to endure a lot of it in the last couple of years. We encourage everyone to take the time needed to reflect, give grace to those around you and yourself and continue to be flexible as we finish out this school year.

Below are some suggestions to consider as you provide ongoing support to your students from the American School Counselor Association website.

Helping Students in Troubling Times

  • Encourage all students to treat others with respect and dignity regardless of differences in culture and beliefs. All students deserve to be treated with respect regardless of their political beliefs, socio-economic background, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender identity, religion, and other factors.

  • For students of some populations, the pandemic brought not just anxiety and despair, but fear for the future. During an emotional period like this, it is important to remind students that their strong emotions will pass and therefore they must refrain from drastic or risky behaviors that could have long-term consequences. If they feel they’ve suffered an emotional loss, they must give themselves time to heal.

  • It’s not a good idea to provide assurances you can’t ensure like “Everything will be okay”. For some students, the dangers they fear are very real. If students are fearful, you can help them find positive ways to address their fears.

  • Help students process information or images they find inflammatory in print, television, and social media. Very often, simply discussing current events can help students develop a better understanding and expressing their emotions can help students deal with them more effectively.

  • Check in with students who may be at risk for bullying and harassment, recognizing that all students have the right to be treated equally and fairly with dignity and respect as unique individuals, free from discrimination, harassment, and bullying. Reassure them that there are adults who can help, work with them to identify those they can go to in a time of need and encourage them to seek out an adult they trust and are comfortable talking to.

Community News
Land acknowledgement

In the district’s sustained work to build a culture of inclusive belonging for students, teachers, staff and the community, we join local, state, national and international efforts to acknowledge Native land.

According to the U.S. Department of Arts and Culture, “In countries such as Canada, New Zealand and Australia, it is commonplace, even policy, to open events and gatherings by acknowledging the traditional Indigenous inhabitants of that land.” Our Equity & Access Department encourages opening school and district events with this impactful Native land acknowledgment:

“We respectfully acknowledge that we gather today on the traditional lands of the Coast Salish Peoples, who have lived in the Salish Sea basin, the San Juan Islands, and the North Cascades watershed since time immemorial. You are on Coast Salish Tribal Land.”
