D-Lab is hiring a Postdoc UC Berkeley Undergraduate Data Science at Scale program
The program aims to implement, scale, and propagate a novel prototype for undergraduate data science education. The project is led by a multidisciplinary group of faculty and staff who collectively bring deep expertise in undergraduate STEM education, data science pedagogy, and the science of diversity and inclusion in higher education.
Through a continuous cycle of design, implementation, evaluation, and refinement, the project advances the field of undergraduate data science education by producing a set of open source curricular materials, developing technical infrastructure, and disseminating the new knowledge necessary to deploy such resources successfully in multiple and diverse institutional settings. Ultimately, we will engage a wide community in the process of institutional transformation.

Applying the Digital Health Social Justice Guide
Digital health, the use of apps, text-messaging, and online interventions, can revolutionize healthcare and make care more equitable. Currently, digital health interventions are often not designed for those who could benefit most and may have unintended consequences. In this paper, we explain how privacy vulnerabilities and power imbalances, including racism and sexism, continue to influence health app design and research. We provide guidelines for researchers to design, report and evaluate digital health studies to maximize social justice in health... read more
For Women's History Month, CDSS female leaders share their own journeys in STEM
by Rachel Leven
When Jennifer Chayes worked towards her doctorate in physics in the 1980’s, she was the only female PhD student in a Princeton University department made up of an entirely male faculty. There were just a handful of women role models in the field at that time.
Today, Chayes leads UC Berkeley’s Division of Computing, Data Science, and Society (CDSS), which is on the path to becoming the first new college at Berkeley in more than 50 years. Many of CDSS’ leaders are women... read more.
Berkeley Computational Social Science Forum Title: Some Progress In Policing Data
Speaker: Jack Glaser, Professor, Goldman School of Public Policy, UC Berkeley Register here
In this talk, Professor Glaser will describe his experiences working to obtain and analyze data on police stops and use of force. Scientific collaborations, grass-roots advocacy and projects, journalistic ventures, litigation, and government programs have all advanced the quantity, quality, and availability of policing data over the past two decades. Data analytic innovations have overcome some of the shortcomings of the data... read more

Undergraduate Data Science at Scale project
We invite students currently or previously enrolled in data science foundation and related courses to take part in the Undergraduate Data Science at Scale project. Depending on your experiences, you might participate in one (or more!) of the following options:
Have you taken or are you enrolled in Data 8 or are involved in other Data Science activities (e.g. Data Scholars, Connector Courses, Discovery Program, etc.)?
Student focus groups: You will receive $25 for your participation in a 90-minute virtual focus group. If you are interested in this opportunity, please respond to this google form.
Have you unenrolled from the Data 8 course?
Student Interviews: You can also talk to us individually by participating in a virtual interview. You will receive $25 for approximately 60 minutes of your time. (All data will be anonymized!) If you are interested in this opportunity, please respond to this google form
Unenrollment survey: Please share your experience by taking a brief 10-minute survey. You will receive a $10 Amazon gift card for your participation. If you are interested in this opportunity, please use this link.
Grad Slam is a UC-wide annual competition for graduate students to showcase their research in a series of three-minute talks. Last month a faculty committee had the tough job of selecting ten student semi-finalists.
