Building the Barricade

Palm Sunday begins with a procession, the triumphant entry of Jesus on a colt into the city, with a crowd of supporters in attendance.  It is the beginning of the climatic events that result in the death of Jesus on a cross.
Likewise, another procession ignites the climatic events in Les Miserables.  The funeral march for General Lamarque is the event that launches the student revolution, as the people erect barricades of wagons and furniture in the streets of Paris.

There is a number of similarities in these two events.  One side sees the events as rebellion and revolution.  The other, a means to bring justice to the people.  A tense government responds to both the leadership of Jesus in Jerusalem and the uprising of the students in Paris with violence.

I hope you’ll join us as we continue our Lenten series, “The Grace of Les Miserables,” this week as we observe the start of Holy Week, Palm Sunday.  Palms will be available for children to process during the opening song in the 10 o’clock service.

Also, please see elsewhere in our newsletter the dates and times of our special Holy Week services, and Easter weekend services.

Until Sunday,

This Sunday is Palm Sunday! I don’t know about you but Lent has approached fast for me this year. As we prepare for Palm Sunday and the start of Holy Week we remember the parade. We remember the crowds cheered and sang and praised Jesus as he entered Jerusalem.

Jesus was traveling with other pilgrims making their way to the temple to celebrate Passover. Everyone was coming to town with thousands of others for the Passover Feast. But people knew that Jesus specifically was coming. And they were eager to see him, even to just catch a glimpse of the man they have heard about.

Like the story of Zacchaeus in Jericho,  do you remember the story of Zacchaeus? Climbing up the sycamore tree just for that glimpse. That story happened on Jesus’ way to Jerusalem. Zacchaeus wanted to see the man whom rumors had spread about. He had heard the stories of Jesus in the country side.. healing people physically, spiritually and emotionally. Zacchaeus had heard how Jesus taught with stories and parables and questions. And people’s lives were changed! These were the rumors. These were the stories of the healings and truth. Jesus was a sight to see, a person of interest, the talk of the town.

How might we be like Zacchaeus this Palm Sunday? How might we welcome Jesus with passion, curiosity and wonder? Will we go out of our way to seek and celebrate this Palm Sunday?

A Word From Our Youth Director

“After he had said this, he went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem.”  - Luke 19:28

This Sunday we begin my favorite week of the year.  It is a week that is a rollercoaster of emotions and is physically exhausting for me as a member of the church staff.  Yet, it is so meaningful because we walk with Jesus through the whirlwind of Holy Week.

We sing praises as Jesus enters into Jerusalem to the shouts of “Hosanna!” on Palm Sunday.  We sit with the disciples in the upper room as Jesus washes their feet and breaks bread with them. We travel to the garden to pray with Jesus and witness his arrest.  We mourn at the foot of the cross as Jesus breathes his last.  And of course, we celebrate with great joy the resurrection on Easter morning!  It is a story that we know well.  Yet, as we walk through these events with Jesus each year, we experience it anew and grow deeply in our faith.

At Woodlawn, our youth are blessed to be a part of this journey, as they lead us in the Good Friday service.  It is amazing to watch as they dive into the familiar story each year and discover more about God’s love for us through his death on the cross.  This year, they are preparing a Tenebrae service for us – where we experience the death of Jesus through the extinguishing of candles.

Make sure to join us for all of the events of Holy Week, beginning this Sunday as we celebrate Jesus’ triumphant entry into Jerusalem!

Thanks,

Bryce Fuhrmann
Youth Director

Did you know that the largest Easter egg in the world is in Vegreville, Canada? Did you know that the most popular Easter candy in the world are Reese’s Peanut Butter Chocolate Eggs? There’s a ton of fun trivia around the theme of Easter but the best questions to ask kids are about Jesus.
Did you know we can love Jesus more than anything? Did you know Jesus is King over everything? Did you know Jesus is alive? Did you know we can trust Jesus? Whatever their answer, invite kids to go beyond the facts and win the grand prize of knowing Jesus for themselves!

We have a packed month full of exciting and fun activities! It will definitely make this month go by so fast. Then we will be basically to summer! Holy moly. Here are several reminders for this week:

Saturday is our Annual Golf Tournament. We still have some spaces open for teams and players. Contact the church office ASAP if you are interested!

Palm Sunday is this Sunday coming up! We will have our normal palms and procession with the kids during service. Please plan to attend!

Camp Horizon registration ends May 1 if you would like the church to pay up to half of your child’s fees! If you have any questions about Camp Horizon or registration, please let me know.

See you soon!

Moment for Mission

Camperships

Camp has an amazing way of giving our students an opportunity to open themselves up to the way that God is moving around them.  At camp, God is experienced in song, nature, fellowship, worship, and adventure. In their time at Camp Horizon, our youth and children will see God in new friends, in the beauty of creation at Inspiration Point, in guest speakers, and in many ways that we cannot plan for.

The Children and Youth Ministries here at Woodlawn encourage families to send their children in grades 1-12 to camp each summer.  In order to assist our families in affording camp for their children we need your help.  Our prayer is that we are able to raise enough funds to cover 50% (up to a $150) for each camper attending.  Camp changes lives. Help be a part of this transformative experience!

Thank you for giving our children and youth this opportunity to encounter God at camp.

Giving remains critical to our church’s mission and ministry. You may mail contributions to the church at 431 S. Woodlawn Blvd. Derby, KS  67037 or

Traditional service at 9am and Contemporary at 10am with the egg hunt following directly after.

We can’t wait to see you there. Don’t forget your basket!

Memorial Lily

Each year Woodlawn decorates the sanctuary & worship center with lilies provided by the congregation in honor or in memory of loved ones. The lily plants, with 5-7 blooms, cost $10 each. You may take your plant with you after Easter services. You may also decide to make a memorial donation of $10 or more towards the church’s MICAH fund, which provides assistance to members of our church family in times of need. A list of Memorial Lily purchases and memorial donations will appear in the Easter bulletins. Forms may be found in the church office.  Deadline is April 10.

Our annual golf tournament is coming up on April 9th!
Woodlawn UMC has a long history of providing meaningful spiritual experiences for children and youth in our community. Our mission is to spiritually shape people to be the heart, hands, and feet of Jesus. One way that we are able to do that effectively with our children and youth is through our camping ministry at Camp Horizon. In a typical year, we send approximately 75 youth and children to Camp Horizon for a week of connecting with God through nature, community, and worship. In order to make this affordable for each of our families, we pay half the cost (up to $150) for each person who registers for camp. That means we need more than $6000 to cover the cost of camp for our children and youth. All the money raised from the sponsorships of our upcoming golf tournament will go toward covering this cost for our summer camps this year.

Do you know of anyone who would like to be a sponsor? We have 3 ways to sponsor, ranging from $25-$100. Contact Caitlin Ott or Bryce Fuhrmann for more information. Sign up in the church office.

All are invited to the annual church Spring Work Day. Show up and spruce up the church! Let's welcome spring and warmer weather by showing the church building and grounds a little TLC.

A note from the Winterfest Team

My how time flies. It has been 4 months since Winterfest, and we apologize for not getting this information out sooner. The Winterfest Team would like to say, Thank you, thank you, thank you to all of the hardworking volunteers who donated their time and talents for Winterfest 2021. Winterfest 2021 was a success, thanks to all of our wonderful volunteers, and we could not have accomplished this big event without them. We made almost $7900 for missions and that money was distributed to the Ramp Ministry, UMCOR Ukraine, Summer Lunch Program, Pando and Grace Med, among other local missions. Returning vendors had until March 31, 2022 to return registration forms for this year. Winterfest 2022 will be December 3, 2022.  Again, thank you so much for all of the volunteers.  We really appreciated all of the help.
Support Derby Police Appreciation Banquet

Woodlawn has been a longtime contributor to the annual Derby Police Appreciation Banquet.  Last year, we opened this opportunity to our congregation, asking anyone who would like to give a gift to do so, which provides a dinner, a gift, and the program and speaker for the event.  Those wishing to make a gift may send it to Woodlawn UMC, designating it for “Police Appreciation.”  All gifts should be made on or before April 20th so that they can be remitted to the event organizers before May for use for the banquet.

Stephen Ministers are here to help

If you are in a struggle with anxiety, loss, and/or isolation, you might not know exactly when your understanding and acceptance from this crisis will come.  But, we can rely on our risen Lord to be truly present with it all, even when others can't be. If you need a message of hope and encouragement, call on a Stephen Minister to help you on this journey. A Stephen Minister can help you through the valleys of life to help restore your joy.  Call Kelly Gifford- 316 708 0691 to be matched with a Stephen Minister.
Derby Food Pantry

The Derby Food Pantry is currently serving 30-40 families a month. They had several wonderful food drives that restocked the food pantry, but they do have some items they could use: boxed potatoes (like scalloped potatoes), crackers, pancake syrup, dry pasta, and spaghetti noodles.

Also, gardeners in our church family, if you have extra produce, they would love for you to share it with our families. They currently distribute food on the first and last Tuesdays and third Saturday of each month. Starting in June there will be a plastic container near the blue tub on Sundays before the first and last Tuesdays and on the Thursday and Friday before the third Saturday for garden produce.

Covid Restrictions Eased

As of 03/01/2022, Woodlawn’s Reopening Team has dropped most restrictions that had been implemented at Woodlawn during the Covid 19 pandemic because of the significant improvement locally in new case rates, hospitalizations and positivity test rates.  Though face masks are no longer required in the building, health officials emphasize that people should still wear face coverings if they wish or if they are personally at high risk and that regardless of local conditions, anyone should mask who has COVID-19 symptoms, a positive test, or has been exposed to someone with COVID-19.

Moving forward, the Woodlawn Reopening Team will factor in the Center for Disease Control’s new guidelines for assessing community risk, which weigh local hospital capacity more heavily than rates of new infections alone. Should Sedgwick county reach a “high” rating on the CDC county risk map, restrictions could be reinstated by the Reopening Team. Currently Sedgwick County’s risk is “medium.”
