Spaces limited for life-saving workshops

In 2021, Rebecca – one of the co-founders of Water Warrriors YEG – lost two family members to drug poisoning. She's made it her mission to train as many people as possible how to recognize and help someone experiencing a drug poisoning.

Water Warriors YEG has partnered with Alberta Avenue Community League to certify trainers willing to train in the community. The group has limited trainers and capacity. The classes are free.

Leagues 101 

April 13, 12-1pm

Do you have a neighbour, local business or not-for-profit organization that doesn’t understand what your League does? Are you a community organization or school that wants to understand how to partner with your local League? If so, this event is for them and for you. Indeed, if you're new to your League or a board member, here's your chance to get acquainted with the history of Leagues. We'll cover:

• The history, function and legal landscape of Leagues
• Opportunities within Leagues for both staff and service-users at your organization
• Potential barriers to working with Leagues
• League capacity
• The role of EFCL 

Community Inclusion Café

April 19, 6:30pm

Listen to queer activist, Jessica Scalzo, discuss ways your Leagues can celebrate Pride and create inclusive spaces for all gender identities. Jessica will be providing:

• tips for getting involved in or hosting Pride celebrations;
• things to consider when running programming;
• simple ways to signal to the community that the League is an LGBTQ2A+ ally.

The Community Inclusion Café is a free meetup space to discuss successes and challenges related to inclusion and allyship within Edmonton’s Community League movement. The format follows a Community League, community member or organization giving a brief overview of a topic, as identified by Leagues, followed by informal discussion among Leagues facilitated by the EFCL. All are welcome.

Mentorship for Civics

April 13, 6:30pm

Join us virtually on April 13, 6:30-7:30pm, for a civics, planning and engagement café to share ideas, skills, resources and experiences. This can help everyone succeed in their roles.

Come prepared to share what neighbourhood sustainability and civics mean to you.

Mentorship for Hall Directors

April 20, 6:30pm

Want to learn how other Community Leagues manage their halls and facilities? Get together to share ideas, skills, resources and experiences to help each other succeed. This café occurs twice this year: April 20 and October 26. Sign up for all, if you like.

Bikes really are a tool to change our city's game

Many people know that walking and cycling are the cleanest ways to get around a city. But what’s less obvious are the enormous benefits for health, road safety, equity, local businesses and neighbourhoods when streets are walkable, safe and welcoming. 

Edmonton City Council’s Urban Planning Committee has called on city administration to explore completion of a proposed expansion to the bike network by 2026. This month, we're getting in gear when it comes to bikes and cities. We hope you enjoy the latest issue.

Spring Sweep Coming

Time to get the grit off the street

The City of Edmonton’s spring sweep campaign starts on April 11, weather permitting, and will run 24 hours a day for seven to eight weeks.

The City has shared that sweep crews will sweep pedestrian areas, adjacent boulevards and parallel roadways. Residential areas will be the focus during the day and high volume areas will be addressed at night. Residents are asked to check the City's website or watch for signage in their neighbourhoods to know when crews will be there. The City suggests residents can help do their part by removing vehicles.
