The April Newsletter

MORE New Markets and MORE Growth and Development!

Hi <<First Name>>,

In last month's newsletter we had a headline that read: "MORE New Markets and MORE Growth and Development!"  We've got EVEN MORE in store!

We shared how we had been invited to a new market at Richardson Farms, and were putting the finishing touches on the commercial kitchen in preparation for the upcoming inspection with the Ohio Department of Agriculture (ODA).

We've got great news!  We passed the inspection without any violations noted or any corrective action required.  It is a great feeling knowing that the collaborative effort paid off in a successful inspection!

What's new at York Meadow Farm?

While there's been lots of talk recently about the growth and development of the fermented foods side of the farm and homestead...some of you might also be wondering what's happening with our bath and body products...

Grand Opening of Handmade Haven, located at 3511 Center Rd, Brunswick, OH 44212 on March 6, 2022.  Open Tuesday-Friday 11am-6pm, Saturday 10am-4pm.
March began with final preparations for the Grand Opening of Handmade Haven in Brunswick. Featuring items from over 20 local artisans, we were more than happy when we were asked to showcase our items in their store!

With increased markets and an increased demand for products, Mom has been thinking of doing larger batches of hot process soap and researching the best way to do so.  We picked up an inexpensive 22 quart roaster oven from the Facebook Marketplace, and the results were better than expected!
Mom's very first attempt at making a scaled batch of hot process lavender soap was a success.  The soap was colored with olive oil infused with alkanet.  This is added to the base soap "batter" to give it the nice lavender color we all enjoy.

What's nice about this is that we are able to make four times the amount of soap in a single batch!  We are all about the increased efficiencies and the potential we have in making larger batches of soaps and hand creams.
Sometimes...people ask us:

"How do we eat our kraut?"

One easy example is to top a salad with it!
Eating healthy doesn't need to be complicated or include calorie counting.

It means eating real food from real people.  For example, the lettuce was grown out front by Cody, the spinach is from Richardson's, Sardines with Lemon from Wild Planet, Shredded Tower Road Cheese from Yellow House Cheese, topped with Farm Dust from Richardson’s and some home made Lemon Dill kraut.

A side of pickles and this light meal is complete!
With the commercial kitchen fully operational, it's time to put all the research into action.  We are now making our various sauerkrauts in food-grade, BPA-Free, 5-Gallon buckets.  This allows The Kraut Guy to increase production and allow time for additional experimentation with new products.  We expect to continue growing our line of fermented foods, so stay tuned for future updates!
We are very excited about the continued growth and development of our homestead - and are proud to share it with you.  Here are couple additional photos from last month from our humble farm and homestead.
Being vendors at the Indoor Farmers & Makers Market at Richardson Farms has a few extra additional perks as well.  Every month we have a family dinner, which is turning into a big family weekend, where Uncle Rob whipped up some pancakes for everyone Sunday morning.

All ingredients for the delicious pancakes were sourced from the market at Richardson Farms, including the delicious sausage links that we all enjoyed!

You can also see that Old Man Winter hadn't given up quite yet at the time of that photo just over a week ago on March 26.

We'll see what the rest of April has in store!

One additional continued experiment of Dad's is spice blends...

Over the years, he's experimented with different rubs and spices - and the most recent experiment is with a breakfast sausage seasoning!

Market Season Updates!

We are excited to announce that we will be back at the Medina Square Farmers Market for the 2022 season. We are happy to be returning to the very first market we attended 10 years ago!

You can find us every Saturday 9am - 1pm on the Medina Historic Public Square or Broadway Street in Downtown Medina.  Opening Day is May 14th!
During the last two seasons we have been present at the Farmers Market at the VFW - however, we found out in early February that the VFW market had been canceled.

We applied to be a vendor at the Medina Square Farmers Market and were accepted along with several other vendors formerly at the VFW market such as:
  • BJ Gourmet Garlic
  • Blaze Gourmet
  • Tea Hill Farms
  • The Farm at Chatham Lea
  • Zensational Organics
For a complete list of all the vendors, check out the Vendor Profiles page!

We look forward to seeing you at the Medina Square Farmers Market!
