¡Hola Osxs!

Dear Chicanx Latinx Cal Alumni, Students, and Friends,

On behalf of the UCB CLAA Board, espero que se encuentren bien y saludables!

I am excited to share with you our newsletter highlighting our work during the month of April and the upcoming opportunities for the upcoming months. As an educator, the work we have engaged in during the month of April is very near and dear to me - we have been able to have UCB CLAA represented in the yield efforts to welcome the newly admitted students and their families to the Cal Bear comunidad. Once again, Cal has broken a record in admitting the largest percentage of Latinx-identifying students. ¡Un triunfo para nuestra comunidad!

As we move our community forward and embrace our presence as Latinx alumni and the mark we leave for future generations, we invite you to save the date for a few events that will signify our kickoff for our Legacy gathering. We invite you to join us at an event near you to network and celebrate as a community the Legacy we want to leave for future Cal Latinx generations. The events will take place as follows and more information to come:

  • June 18 - Davis - Tres Hermanas Restaurant (Northern California)

  • July 8 - UCB UC CLAA Summer Reception (UC Berkeley)

  • July 16 - Downey - Ola RestoBar (Southern California)

  • July 23rd - Fresno - Arte Americas (San Joaquin/Central Valley)

Additionally, I am glad to share that the UCB CLAA Board will come together on July 8 with an open reception for Latinx Cal alumni at the Latinx Research Center at 6:00pm (2547 Channing Ave, Berkeley, CA 94704) RSVP Here. And on July 9 the board will meet for our mid-year retreat to continue planning our work ahead to provide this beautiful space for current and prospective Latinx alumni.

Los invitamos to read this newsletter and take note of all of the ways in which you may stay connected to our beloved alma mater. I wish you and your loved ones buena salud y prosperidad!

En Comunidad,
Dra. Margarita Landeros (Maggie) ‘09
CLAA Secretary

Mariana Chavez

Welcome our new intern Mariana Chavez! The team is excited to work with Mariana and hopes she likes it here as much as we do. Here is what she has to say:

¡Hola Osxs!

Soy Mariana Chavez and I'm looking forward to connecting with you all! I grew up in SoCal in a little tourist place named Palm Springs. I recommend going for any small vacations. Currently, I'm a second year History major focusing on Latin American history. Whenever I'm not reading for my classes, I like to learn about the histories of the places meaningful to me and the people around me like the homeland of my parents in Zacatecas and the historical Mexican presence in Palm Springs. I also like to travel and paint! Thank you for the warm welcome and I hope to hear from y'all!

Alumni Engagement

Conexiones de CAL

Become a Mentor

We have established a new mentorship program, Conexiones de CAL, with campus partners. Its purpose is to serve Chicanx/Latinx-identifying students, many of whom are first-gen and/or low-income, and provide them with peer mentorship during their time here at Cal.

We are currently recruiting mentors for the program. Practitioners and other experts in the field are welcome! Mentors who can meet with our students a few times throughout the semester and over the summer as they work on projects would provide professional and educational advice to these students throughout the length of the mentorship.

If you are interested in being a mentor or know of other Cal Alums who are, please sign up!

Melinna Bobadilla

Melinna Bobadilla is a daughter of Los Angeles whose work as an actor & cultural creative aim to disrupt & complexify current limited paradigms of Latine “representation” & narratives in media. Best known for her screen & stage performances, Melinna is a multi-hyphenate creative who is also an educator, voice over artist, special correspondent/guest host for Futuro Media’s Latino Rebels, consulting producer for Latino USA’s upcoming live show, cultural critic, public speaker, & aguacate devotee.

Best known for her stage & screen performances, Melinna’s work can currently be found on Netflix, Apple TV+, HBO Max, Paramount Plus, & soon on Showtime. One of the roles she is proudest of is that of fierce immigration attorney “Melinna Barragan” on the second season of the Peabody & GLAAD award nominated Netflix series ‘GENTEFIED’. Other notable TV & Film credits include the role of “Santos” in the final season of ‘Orange is The New Black,’ Gloria on the critically acclaimed Apple TV+ original series ‘Little America,’ ABC’s ‘Grand Hotel,’ The 50th anniversary revival of ‘Zoot Suit’ at the Mark Taper Forum, & Steven Soderbergh’s ‘The Laundromat.’

Melinna served as co-producer & stars as the lead, Eva, in the award-winning short film “For Rosa” based on the Madrigal Ten & the 1975 Madrigal v Quilligan federal class action case, centering the stories of Latinas who survived forced sterilization at LA County General Hospital. ‘For Rosa’ highlights the reproductive health disparities faced by Black & brown women & is currently streaming on HBO Max. Additionally, Melinna was named “Best Actress” at the 2021 Next Gen Independent Film Awards for her work in ‘For Rosa’.  In June of 2021, Melinna was featured in the historic L.A. Times multi-part special report, “Hollywood’s Latino Culture Gap,” where she touched upon the importance of dismantling white supremacy within entertainment. Prior to pivoting largely to media & entertainment, she worked with various cultural institutions & nonprofits such as MALDEF, El Teatro Campesino, Pedagogy & Theater of the Oppressed Inc, & Center Theatre Group in a capacity that utilized theater & arts as tools for popular education & organizing.

Melinna holds a dual BA in Ethnic Studies & Mass Communications from UC Berkeley & a Masters degree in Theater & Education from New York University. Melinna is the proud 1st gen daughter of incredibly supportive & loving parents who migrated to northeast Los Angeles from Mexico & named her after a Camilo Sesto song, is best friends with her younger sister, & currently resides in LA with the love of her life, another Cal alum she serendipitously met at a house party years after graduating.
