APRIL

10, 16: Myco Buoy Workshop with Sue Van Hook
Hands-on creation of mycelium buoys to replace plastic in aquaculture, includes panel discussion with aquaculture (cool kid) stakeholders on Apr 16. Meet the oysters, touch the mushrooms, grind and sterilize hemp, eat freshly harvested kelp and learn about ecological material science from an amazing mycologist. We can arrange indoor camping. $20 donation to register.

20: Portland Public Library Event
New Farmers’ Almanac Vol VI, in discussion with Gretchen Legler, author of Woodsqueer. FREE virtual event.

22: Smithereen Farm and Campus OPEN HOUSE
Come see the farm, get a tour, eat yummy food, meet the team (and the oxen!). Reversing Hall will also be open on this day. All are welcome. FREE EVENT
 
MAY
14-15: CCC Design Charette
What would a climate resilience workforce do in our town? Join for a facilitated conversation and community brainstorming with landscape architects and restoration specialists as we think together about how the newly funded Climate Conservation Corps might be an asset in our area. What would we do first? Who are the stakeholders? What kinds of shared land-use goals might bring more people into the work of preparing our region for the climate change that is headed our way. This session will inform a 2 week ‘restoration camp’ later in the summer. RSVP for more info!
 
20-21: Alewife Smoking Event with Downeast Salmon Federation
Bring the whole family for a day on the banks of the Pennamaquan catching, dipping, smoking, and eating alewifes! See you at the old Crossroads motel-- all are welcome. FREE EVENT
 
27: Sensing + Eating Place - FANCY DINNER OPTIONAL
Through tasting, movement, listening and seeing, connect with this local environment on Cobscook Bay. Join chef and dance artist Hilary Kennedy and Severine for a day of experiential, open movement scores/games along with tasting hyper local flavors. Workshop will be entirely outdoors. 27: Brian Dewan, Singer and Player of Accordion and Electro-Harp
Reversing Hall will host legendary performer Brian Dewan for a collection of songs chosen for the occasion. He may even play a few from the album he produced with Greenhorns "Songs of the Patrons of Husbandry” from the 1880’s Grange songbook. FREE EVENT
 
JUNE
 
11: Wild Herbs of the Northeast, Confronting History and Future of Herbalism
Dr. Susan Leopold, ethnobotanist, and Mischa Shuler, herbalist, visit the farm to deliver a workshop wild herbs including a section about the herbal mystic/“Clairvoyant physician” of Pembroke, Thomas Pomeroy

Join with experienced and inexperienced harvesters to learn about wild seaweeds in Maine
 
25: Yurt Legend Bill Coperthwaite Anthropological Film and Tour of Lifeworld
Visit to the magical realm of Dickinson's Reach and a screening of Anna Grimshaw's films about Bill. For more info reach out to office@greenhorns.org.
 
JULY
 
8-21: Yurt Building
Mike Iancona of Dickinson's Reach Yurts teaches a two-week course on yurt construction on the banks of the Pennamaquan River, we will build yurts! Registration link coming soon! 
 
10-23: Kroka Kayak Expeditions
Explore the marine ecosystems of Downeast Maine - by kayak! Sign up with KROKA.org
 
24-Aug 6: CCC Restoration Camp
Applying the outcomes of our community charrette we will undertake group work in trail building, nursery work, riparian restoration along the Pennamaquan River corridor. Details will be posted on our events page!
 
30: Liberty Hall, National Heritage Area, Regalia on Display
Learn about Liberty Hall and the history of Downeast's many civic and fraternal halls, Odd Fellows regalia on display and an introduction to the proposed National Heritage Area for downeast Maine with Crystal Hitchings of Downeast Acadia Regional Tourism.
 
AUGUST
 
6-7: Wild Blueberry Weekend
A weekend of family fun picking and eating blueberries -- pie-making galore! 
 
12-13: Wild Foraging and Cooking with Rachel Alexandrou
Join forager and feast-maker Rachel Alexandrou in a weekend workshop on harvesting, processing and cooking some of our favorite August forage-ables.

13-14: Beach Trash Puppets
Turtle Dance Coop of Lubec will guide attendees in the creation of their own "vital assemblages" - made out of beach trash! Donation supports Pembroke Clean Water campaign.

7-8: Seaweed Commons at Seagriculture USA Conference

9-10: Intro to Biodynamics
Barbara Shinn will share her knowledge of biodynamic agricultural practices and explore how farmers can attain the highest level of regenerative practices. RSVP to office@greenhorns.org please.

15-18: Portland Kayak Trip
Portland Kayak Co. visits for a long weekend of kayaking in beautiful Downeast Maine. You can book with them directly, so glad to provide facilities for this independent outfitter!
 
17-18: Wild Fungi Foraging with Sue Van Hook
Sue leads a guided foraging trek through the woods of Smithereen Farm, exploring the myriad fungi growing in this slice of wild Downeast.
 
18: Indie Singer: Diane Cluck, Commonwealth
Another wonderful musician plays Reversing Hall. 4 Leighton Point Rd in Pembroke. $10 suggested donation.
 
September-October
Apple camp: Pick apples with us, press for cider and wine! Dates to be announced.
 
OCTOBER
 
1: ‘Habitat Everywhere’ --  Meadows, seeps and shrubs with Paula Kovecese
Working to improve habitat for the native insects, birds and toads of our region, details to come.
