During Bridge the Gap 2021 (if you missed the event, you can see the highlights here), we were able to gather six of the brightest minds in hitting for a panel that did not disappoint.

You might have heard of some of them:

  • Donne Ecker - Texas Rangers: MLB Bench Coach & Offensive Coordinator
  • Rob Van Scoyoc - Los Angeles Dodgers: MLB Hitting Coach
  • Matt Swope - University of Maryland: Hitting Coach
  • Rick Strickland - Chicago Cubs: MiLB Hitting Coach
  • Bobby Tewksbary - Peletero
  • Chris Colabello - Pelotero, former MLB player

In the conversation, we opened up the following question to the panelists: “What’s one of the most common drills or concepts you often refer to when working with hitters?

The overall consensus? Something that gets them to stop.

If we think about this answer, it runs contradictory to most of what you’ll commonly hear in the cages. Kids are being taught to rotate faster, swing harder, and get more bat speed. Our panelists seem to suggest the opposite.

It’s not that they don’t like speed or rotating. They just like it in small windows - when we need it the most. Stopping helps us do just that.

If you’re working with kids who spin and can’t find ways to stop, below is an example progression you can utilize from the mentorship portal:

  • Waterbag Feet Cement Turns: Clap Constraint
    • When we don't have time, we can't afford to waste it. Using time to your advantage can help turn a spin into a stop.
  • Closed 15s
    • Adding some angle down low eliminates the range you have to spin off the baseball. You get to your stopping point sooner.
  • Basketball/Soccer Swings
    • Don't just tell someone to brace on the ball and stop. Give them an implement where they can feel it for themselves.
  • Stop Swings
    • Take a bad round of BP and turn it around fast by telling your hitters to stop as fast as they can.

Got some better ideas? Build out your own progression using the trunk decel & sticks section of the portal.
