[HAPPENING TODAY!] Center for Japanese Studies Thursday Lecture
The Japanese Way of Well-being and the Self: An Examination of Local and Working Communities
Thursday, April 7, 2022
7:00 - 8:30 PM EST
Register to attend via Zoom

Recently, cultural analysis has focused on dynamics within groups, such as regional areas where socio-ecological functions are shared, and workplaces where common goals are pursued. Those groups provide both independence-oriented goals to fulfil individuals' need for control and interdependence-oriented goals to maintain social harmony and cooperation. Especially in Japan, where group-level interdependence has traditionally been valued, these two orientations are sometimes in conflict due to individuals' increasing independence as a result of globalization. Using a series of organizational data from Japan, we found that individuals, having to undergo fair evaluation systems and competition, do not explicitly feel advantaged by interdependence. Nonetheless, interdependence still provides positive outcomes, such as improved physical health and resilience to risk (e.g., flexibility under the COVID-19 pandemic). This means that interdependent cultural values (e.g., social capital within a group, family-like social ties) function as a social infrastructure for well-being in Japan. This presentation will also focus on the similarities in cultural values (e.g., low mobility, group activity orientation, concern for reputation by others) between the workplace and local farming areas. The implications of this way of being, such as seeking happiness and health, will be discussed.

Yukiko Uchida is Professor of Cultural and Social Psychology at the Kokoro Research Center, Kyoto University. Upon receiving her PhD in social psychology from Kyoto University in 2003, she started her academic career as a visiting researcher at the University of Michigan and Stanford University. Since 2008, she has been based at the Kokoro Research Center. As a cultural psychologist, she studies the psychological mechanisms behind the experience of emotions like wellbeing. She is a 2019-2020 Berggruen fellow at CASBS at Stanford University.

This colloquium series is made possible by the generous support of the U.S. Department of Education Title VI grant.

[HAPPENING TODAY!] Screening of “Auction of Souls” & A Conversation with Arsinée Khanjian
Thursday, April 7, 2022
7:00 PM
State Theater (Theater 2)
Free and open to the public. No registration required.

Auction of Souls
Performing Memory by and with Arsinée Khanjian
With Elmira Bahrami, Taner Şahintürk and Jesse Jonas Kracht

In 1918, "Ravished Armenia," the eyewitness account of then 18-year-old Aurora Mardiganian, which relentlessly described her ordeal through the massacre of the Armenians, triggered a wave of shock. Only a handful of scenes and the script have survived from the film version that was created in 1919 with Aurora in the leading role. The copies disappeared just like Aurora, who died penniless and forgotten in Los Angeles at 92 years old. Arsinée Khanjian reconstructs the story of a desperate attempt to relate the indescribable.

For the 2022 Dr. Berj H. Haidostian Distinguished Lecture ARSINÉE KHANJIAN, in conversation with scholar MARIE-AUDE BARONIAN, will discuss the genesis of “Performing Memory” and its various interpretative layers.

Arsinée Khanjian is a Canadian-Armenian-Lebanese actress, performer, producer, and civil rights activist. Throughout her career as an artist, she has extensively worked with her partner, Canadian-Armenian filmmaker Atom Egoyan, and she collaborated with numerous international filmmakers such as, a.o., Michael Haneke, Catherine Breillat, the Taviani brothers, Olivier Assayas, and Fatih Akin. Khanjian is also actively involved in several artistic and community groups: she has been a member of the Board of Directors of the Zoryan Institute for International Genocide and Human Rights Studies, of Canada’s leading contemporary art gallery The Power Plant, and was Co-Chair of the renowned Canadian contemporary dance company, Dancemakers.

Marie-Aude Baronian is an Associate Professor in the Department of Media Studies at the University of Amsterdam. She has extensively lectured and written about Armenian diasporic visual arts, ethics and aesthetics, film and philosophy, media and memory, fashion/textile and visual culture, and material objects. Her most recent monographs include “Screening Memory: The Prosthetic Images of Atom Egoyan” (2017), and “Image et Mémoire: Regards sur la Catastrophe arménienne” (2013).

Summer Study Opportunity: Oxford Summer Programme on International Affairs
Program Application Deadline: Sunday, May 15, 2022

The Oxford Summer Programme on International Affairs is a comprehensive, residential summer programme in Oxford, United Kingdom, providing a “master class” on the foreign policy and international security challenges of today’s geopolitical environment. The programme offers daily lectures by elite scholars from leading institutions (Oxford, Cambridge, King’s College London, Yale, and others) as well as seminars by high-level policymakers and practitioners (from the United Nations, NATO, the Atlantic Council of the United Kingdom, and diplomats/ Ambassadors from various sovereign states).

We are delighted to announce that in 2022 the Summer Programme is scheduled to take place, in person, with residential accommodation provided by St. Edmund Hall in the University of Oxford. Founded in 1278 A.D., the Hall is one of the most ancient constituent colleges of the University of Oxford, and, according to its own history, “the oldest surviving academic society to house and educate undergraduates in any university."

Students who successfully complete the programme’s course of lectures, seminars, and tutorials, and adequately deliver a foreign policy briefing in front of world experts receive an official Completion Certificate, jointly signed in recognition by officials from St. Edmund Hall in the University of Oxford, and by the Oxford Diplomacy and Geopolitics Forum academic directors.

The topic of this year’s programme is “New Crises and Great Power Politics” and the dates of the programme are July 3rdth to July 10th (inclusive).

Students may undertake seminars on the following topics of interest:
  • NATO after Afghanistan (2021) and Ukraine (2022)
  • Great Power Politics Redux: China and Russia
  • Counter-terrorism & Emerging Security Challenges
  • Middle Eastern Geopolitics: (Re)orientations & Calibrations
  • The Pacific Theatre: North Korea and Japan
  • Cyber-Security: New Challenges and Opportunities
  • The Resurgence of Right-wing Populism
  • Outer Space: The Final Frontier of Politics
The programme is organized by the Oxford Diplomacy and Geopolitics Forum (ODGF), in partnership with various UK-based and international organisations. In addition to the academic content and research opportunities, the staff are committed to providing mentoring and support to all attendees. All participants become lifelong members of the ODGF Global Partners Network of elite academics and senior policymakers.

Entry to the programme is competitive, and we would encourage submittting an application as soon as possible. A waiting list will be maintained for those who are not selected in the first round but who show great potential. The deadline for applicants is fast approaching, on May 15th, 2022. We provide a number of generous full and partial scholarships to promising students.
