Dear Maynard Family,

Our Vision25 partnership with OpenNews and Online News Association is committed to establishing institutions of belonging by building racial equity in the newsroom.

One of the goals of our Belonging in the News webinar series is to hold space for journalists of color who share their stories and experiences with others. Attendees of these events are often actively engaging in the webinar chat so we decided to throw an after party discussion to strengthen those connections. And you're invited!

All the event details are outlined below. For your convenience, you only need to RSVP in one place. If you've already registered for Belonging in the News with Versha Sharma on April 13th, then you are all set. If you have not yet registered for the webinar, be sure to sign-up below to join us for more mic drops and the after party. We look forward to seeing you there next week!

Stay positive. Test negative.

With gratitude,

Evelyn Hsu and Martin G. Reynolds

In honor of the 2022 return of our popular Vision25 virtual event series, we shared a compilation of some of our favorite moments from the past episodes last year including Wesley Lowery's mic drop on the myth of objectivity: "If our standard is to appear to be objective, our standard becomes to lie to our readers." "No matter what kind of role you hold or what kind of influence you think you have, you can make a difference by participating in some form of salary transparency."

Everyone can help close the wage gap for journalists of color
By Emma Carew Grovum

"No matter what kind of role you hold or what kind of influence you think you have, you can make a difference by participating in some form of salary transparency." Part of the Sincerely, Leaders of Color series, written for everyone in the journalism industry who cares about creating a more supportive environment for journalists of color to do their best work.

Journalism should take a cue from entertainment — diversity grows audiences
By Paul Cheung

"If we take lessons from industries that have embraced diversity, challenge traditional practices that marginalize underrepresented communities, and recognize that staff diversity is essential to good business, we can create journalism that’s relevant to the communities we cover, resonates with a new generation and paves a sustainable path into the future."

DEI Coalition Year 2: Taking Action (Sign up and join!)
By Sisi Wei

"Imagine with me for a moment: What could we accomplish if every member of the Coalition — every type of reporter, manager, editor, funder, direct supporter, professor, and student of journalism — got together and worked collectively to make systems level change across the journalism industry? What if that process also centered joy, flexibility, clarity, and making lifelong connections?"

Maynard 200 Fellowship Program's Mentorship in Action

After Maynard 200 fellows complete the program, they receive a full year of 1:1 mentorship from media industry experts and veterans. Samantha Guzman, Class of 2021 Maynard 200 Alum, and Executive Editor at Austin PBS recently tweeted that she got to meet in-person with her mentor and retired chief of copy desks at the Los Angeles Times, Henry Fuhrmann. We love to see it!

Stay tuned for updates on the incoming Maynard 200 Class of 2022 to be announced next month.
