Dear <<First Name>>,

In honour of students approaching the end of the winter term, I wanted to share a photo of my university graduation. As you can tell, I haven't changed a bit! 😉 It's crazy how time flies. Hanging out with friends and strolling across the UBC campus were some of my fondest memories of university.

Good luck to all of the students taking final exams right now, and congratulations to all of the students who are graduating soon!

We are continuing our Ministry Spotlight! This is where we highlight the key 2021 accomplishments of my ministry, the Ministry of Advanced Education and Skills Education.
Provincial Tuition Waiver Program

My ministry's highest priority is ensuring that people can access and be successful in their post-secondary training and education. These investments will build a strong and resilient workforce that is ready for any challenges.

Tuition Waiver for Youth in Care!

Since we launched the Provincial Tuition Waiver program in September 2017, eligible youth in care may access B.C.'s 25 public post-secondary institutions, Native Education College, and ten union trades training institutions tuition-free. The program has benefitted more than 1,600 learners thus far, and enrollment is expected to increase.

My Ministry remains committed to helping students by removing barriers to education by funding initiatives and programs to empower Indigenous students to access post-secondary education.

Lorena Bishop, executive director, Federation of B.C. Youth in Care Networks –

"Our organization was formed by youth in care and former youth in care who understood the importance that supports, connections and a sense of family play in their lives. The Provincial Tuition Waiver Program is vital because post-secondary education and training support young people who've been in care to improve their lives and reach their full potential."

Here are some things I'd like to share with you from the past week:

Mass Timber Action Plan was launched, and four new projects were announced.

We know how important a sustainable forest industry is for our province, and we need to manage our forests to ensure they are there for future generations.

Through our new Mass Timber Action Plan, we will further drive innovation and growth in this sector.

This means new opportunities for jobs, growth and innovation in every part of the province and additional potential for rural and First Nations communities.

Single-step certification will protect the right to join a union.

Through the pandemic, we’ve seen that many people want to make their workplaces safer, have a say about their work schedules, and negotiate better wages and benefits.

Single-step certification will allow workers to form a union when a clear majority of all workers indicate they wish to do so – without the threat of employer interference or intimidation.

When workers have a free choice to join a union, it raises the standard of living and helps build a strong middle class.

Province to increase housing, services near transit hubs

We’re introducing amendments that will boost transit-oriented development, allowing us to build new housing and services near transit hubs.

These changes will help us address some of our key priorities, such as new housing, job creation, livable communities, affordability for families and more.

“Public transit isn’t just about getting from A to B; it’s also about building greener and more liveable communities. We will increase the affordable housing and services integrated into our significant investments in transit,” said Rob Fleming, Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure.

B.C. First Nations move forward with unprecedented old-growth deferrals.

Our forests make B.C. one of the best places to live, and we owe it to our children and grandchildren to better care for our old-growth forests.

After decades of inaction left some of B.C.’s oldest trees at risk, we’re taking another critical step to put Indigenous Peoples at the centre of land management in their territories.

Partnering with First Nations across B.C., we’re deferring the harvest of nearly 1.7 million hectares of old-growth – an area equal to 1,400 Stanley Parks.
