Friday 8 April 2022
Last week the Invercargill North Rotary Club blessed us again dropping off new dictionaries for all our Year 4 ākonga. This has been an annual event for many years. Our ākonga were definitely excited to get their own copy (some had even been waiting a whole year!)
With the Board's approval, in 2021 I applied to the Ministry of Education for a Principal's Study Leave/Sabbatical and was successful in gaining this for Term 2 2022.

In my absence, I am pleased to introduce the school community to Diane Walker who will be Acting Principal while I am on leave. Diane is an experienced Principal who moves around the country as a Principal Reliever. Diane is very much looking forward to working again at Myross Bush School after she was the Principal here from 1998-2009.

During my Term 2 Leave I will be completing study into Flipped Learning to strengthen the successful journey Akotoa has already been on. I look forward to sharing my report with the community on my return.
Nominations for this week's Myross Bush School Values Awards are:

Paige Dawson for Ngakau Tapatahi “Doing the right thing even when no one else is looking.” Paige is an outstanding member of Akotoa. She demonstrates Ngakau Tapatahi by always doing the right thing both in and out of the classroom. She uses her initiative when faced with problems and is able to stay on task at all times. Ka pai Paige!

Lucas Pierce for Whakapai Ake “Be the best you can be.” Lucas, you have shown impressive progress in your reading. You have been working incredibly hard and it has been fantastic to see you challenging yourself with a range of chapter books! Kai Pai Lucas!

Katie Milne for Te Papa Atawhai “Reduce, reuse, recycle and restore, replenish.” Katie works hard to look after our class environment and engaged thoughtfully with our recent learning about Kerr Bush and the Ngahere. Ka pai Katie!

Holly Mason for Whakapai Ake “Be the best you can be.” Holly tries her hardest in all of her workshops. She is great at challenging herself to improve her work and complete it to a high standard. Tino pai Holly!

Hunter Farquhar for Whakapai Ake "Be the best you can be." Hunter has been very engaged in his learning, particularly at Literacy time. He is setting and achieving goals and making great connections!

Maddie Sinclair for Ngakau Tapatahi "Doing the right thing when no one is looking." Maddie has been working hard to get all her work completed even when she's not working with a teacher.  Ka pai Maddie, What a great improvement!

Hagen Saro for Te Papa Atawhai “Reduce, reuse, recycle and restore, replenish.” Hagen, you are always looking for ways to look after our space. You are very helpful at tidy up time and make sure that you are ready to learn during workshop times. We love how you care.

This week the Values trophy is awarded to:
Oliver More for Ngakau Tapatahi. Oliver, you are always doing the right thing, even when nobody is looking. You are friendly and helpful, and always try your best in all that you do. We enjoy having you in Matai and know that we can always rely on you to be right on task!
We wish to send a warm welcome to Riley who has started in Matai this week. We also look forward to welcoming Hettie next week.
The School Board met last week and a part from the Principal's report on progress made on the Board's Annual Plan, the following are some of the topics discussed:
  • Principal's Professional Growth Cycle (aka Appraisal) and impending Study Leave/Sabbatical
  • Chatbus South End of 2021 Report
  • Playground Inspection Outcome - the Adventure Playground has been closed until more pea gravel can be added. Other items will need to be replaced in time e.g. tyre swings and cargo nets.
  • Out of Zone Applications - the Board agreed to open the remaining unfilled spaces from Term 2-3 for Term 4 and Term 1 2023 (i.e. up to x10 five year olds). Applications close 28 June 2022.
If you would like to know more, please contact the office for a copy of the meeting minutes or speak with myself or Nic Hill (Board Chair).
Supporting the classroom and schoolwide work we are doing to promote socially and emotionally healthy ākonga, we also have the following free and confidential options available to families:
  1. Chatbus - this counselling service is available to students one day a week on-site at school. Students can self-refer through a post box in the school office and parents can make a referral by emailing the Counsellor on miles.chatbus@gmail.com
  2. Public Health Nurse - can be reached if you would like support at the following email address sarah.liggins-walters@southerndhb.govt.nz
Amnesty Window
As it is the end of a messy term with absences higher than normal, we are aware that some students may have a collection of school property at home. This includes but is not limited to books, and visi vests.
Please return these to school before the term finishes and there will be no questions asked. Thank you.

This week our absentee rate has been sitting around 17% which is down from 25% last week and 33% the week before.

Currently we have 10 positives cases of Covid and 29 have recovered and returned to school. All up this equates to 25% of the school currently has or has had Covid.

The majority of our students who are at home isolating have winter cold-like symptoms and are testing negative to Covid. Thank you for your diligence in keeping unwell students at home therefore making school a healthier and safer place for all.

The following flow chart has been helpful for families if they have another covid case in the family (please refer to our website for more information):
Sport
In the above image we have Myross Bush School, Rimu and Wallacetown combining to form a cricket team. This image illustrates how for a number of years now, we have been working with other schools to ensure students don't miss out on their preferred choice of sport. This takes extra organisation and I want to honour Mel Lemin for the work she does as our Sports Connector.
Term 2 After School Sport Registrations are now open. Please log into Enrolmy to register your child for these. Registrations close on Monday 11th April at 8.00pm.

Friends of the School
FOS Easter Raffle Cards and Money are due in on Monday (11th).
Super prizes up for grabs so please encourage children to keep selling!

I have had a couple of queries re payment options:
As an alternative to returning cash with the cards families can dd payment into FOS account.
We ask that one payment is made per family clearly identifying "family/childs name" and "FOS Raffle" and number of cards that payment is affiliated with.
The FOS account is: 03 1355 0719721 00

Thank you
