People face transportation challenges like pollution, long commute times, traffic congestion and insufficient parking all over New York. Low- and moderate-income communities are often particularly hard hit. Groups around the state are working to expand the use of e-bikes, scooters and other electric and active transportation modes to reduce vehicle traffic and improve quality of life.
That's why CDFIs, urban planners, employers and others formed the Equitable Commute Project (ECP) - to bring micromobility to more New Yorkers!
The New York State CDFI Coalition is hosting a free webinar featuring a welcome from Leah Golby, President of the NYS Bicycling Coalition, and presentations from Marianna Koval, Director, Invest NYC SDG | Center for Sustainable Business, NYU Stern School of Business; and Melanie Stern, NYS CDFI Coalition board member and Director of Consumer Lending for Spring Bank, the funding partner of ECP with “E-Bike Loan NYC." They'll be joined by Jared Rodriguez, Principal, Emergent Urban Concepts, a planner based in the Hudson Valley.
What would an equitable commute look like in your community? Is there reliable public transportation? Are some of your neighborhoods transportation deserts? Are major employers accessible without a car?
Spring Bank and the Equitable Commute Project will share their model that can be replicated around the state. The ECP is helping essential workers and others purchase e-bikes with innovative low-cost, no credit score financing from Spring Bank. And they're including a workforce development component to prepare New Yorkers for jobs in the micromobility industry.
ECP launched its pilot program in December 2021, matching 15 lower-income essential workers with subsidized e-bikes in the Bronx. The project is a finalist in NYSERDA’s Electric Mobility Challenge for underserved communities, and ECP hopes to be able to demonstrate replicability outside of New York City.
