Section Night: Alastair McDowell Enchaining the Peaks

We've got Alastair McDowell up from Christchurch to talk at the next section night! Earlier this summer, Alastair McDowell & Hamish Fleming set out on a mission to enchain New Zealand’s 24 highest mountains above 3000 metres in a continuous transalpine journey with a one-month time limit. From the west coast jungles to high-alpine glaciers, this was an adventure through some of the Southern Alps' most dramatic landscapes. The uncertainty of their success spurred them on through exhaustion, wild weather, and a ticking clock, with the final peak Tititea/Mt Aspiring - a 280km bike ride away - always hanging in the balance.

Come join us on 14 April at the Tararua Tramping Club (4 Moncrieff St) for this talk! Arrive from 5:30pm for a 6pm start. There'll be pizza and we'll head to the Hop Garden pub after to continue the yarns.

This is a vaccine pass required event, we'll be checking at the door. Masks are not required after entry.

About Alastair:
Alastair McDowell is a Christchurch-based mountaineer & adventurer, with 10 years climbing experience in NZ and overseas - Peru, Patagonia, Europe, Canada and Alaska. Rather than chasing pure difficulty in the mountains, he prefers challenges based on endurance or speed over moderately technical terrain. After a few years spent living in the alpine meccas of Chamonix and Canmore, he now focuses his energy in the New Zealand mountains. He is a member of the NZ Alpine Team and the Christchurch Alpine Cliff Rescue Team, and is the Instruction Officer for the Canterbury Mountaineering Club. He works as a renewable energy engineering consultant.
