For our new installment of CST Radio
we're excited to welcome m50

m50 is an enigma. Releasing music as Area for years, starting and running Kimochi in 2010, contributing to the Gramaphone Records blog, DJing worldwide, yet still remaining extremely low-profile, the attention always on the art and never on the person. This same ethos runs through Kimochi. No advertising, likely discovered via word-of-mouth (the way we did), small run releases that aren’t about moving units, instead always remaining true to a vision of supporting friends creating heady, textural sounds presented in a meaningful way.

~ NEW ARRIVALS ~

TOMU DJ - FEMINISTA

We’re very excited to offer two releases from California-based artist Tomu DJ. Four Dance Tracks, her first record blends footwork, breaks, and techno into four uptempo yet deep club cuts. Her self-released debut full-length, Feminista, retains trace elements of club influence, but uses them as a jumping-off point for more introspective avant-pop and ambient explorations, where even more uptempo songs like "Exposed Nerve" have a dreamlike, contemplative essence.

Madalyn Merkey

Madalyn Merkey is a composer and performer of live computer music based in the San Francisco Bay Area and a graduate of the Electronic Music program at Mills. On her latest album, Puzzle Music, she weaves disparate sounds into complex arrangements that reward repeated listening. She views the songs as "mechanisms in a timepiece," but this is not time as we know it, rather a surrealistic world where time moves forward and backward, fast and slow, in all directions at once. Also stocking copies of 2014's "Valley Girl."

4MACIÓN- PASSION FRUIT

4mación* is the work** between a human named Kristian Dahlbom and their computer music counterpart performing together en vivo through the creation of living sound. PASSION FRUIT (2021) by 4mación explores the sweet, tart, silly, brutal, and primordial sounds that are the result of different instances of co-performance between the two parties. Often using machine learning tools, Kristian interfaces with their counterpart through cameras, laptop keys, and physical motion sensors that activate and inject life into the music-generating process. The resulting sounds express an uncanny aliveness created through data transfer and computer algorithms. Kristian is a Swedish and Mexican-American composer/performer from Los Angeles living in the San Francisco Bay Area. They are currently inspired by xenobots and Hercules beetles.

WEIRD EAR RECORDS

Founded in 2011 by Dianne Lynn and Raub Roy, Weird Ear has steadily released music from the fringes of the experimental and sound scene. Actively avoiding any sort of through line, Weird Ear intentionally seeks out projects that differ from their previous output. The result is something new and unexpected each time. Difficult to categorize, these records just need to be heard.

SHELTER PRESS

Since 2012, artist Félicia Atkinson and publisher Bartolomé Sanson have been operating somewhere between the intersection of art, poetry, and experimental music, exploring these boundaries via artist books, records, and exhibitions. We're very excited to stock a selection of their releases!
