Week Ending March 28th

Taylor Hawkins, the drummer for the Foo Fighters and one of the most recognizable names in rock, died tragically on Friday at the age of 50. Watch the Foo Fighters play Everlong at last week’s Lollapalooza Argentina here — it was the last song Taylor performed prior to his death five days later.

BIGGEST Songs of the Week 📈

Cardi B… or as Vulture’s Justin Curto puts it, Cardi R&B. On the extended version of Summer Walker and SZA’s 2021 track No Love, Cardi B takes a risk by substituting her usual spitfire raps for lush vocals. The original version of No Love appeared on Summer’s critically acclaimed sophomore LP Still Over It, released last November. The SZA-assisted track debuted at No. 13 on the Billboard Hot 100, making it Summer’s biggest hit to-date. Thanks to Cardi, No Love is about to get even bigger.

Though Cardi’s vocals can’t quite keep up with the two queens of R&B’s, her sultry singing is an exciting new direction for an artist we have heard very little from since Up’s release over a year ago. Notably, this isn’t the first time the Bronx native has collaborated with either artist. Last year, Cardi provided spoken-word affirmations on Bitter, the opening track for Summer’s Still Over It. And in 2018, SZA appeared on I Do from Cardi’s Grammy-winning debut album Invasion of Privacy.

BEST Songs of the Week 🔥

Over the past two months, we’ve shared several previews of Japanese fashion icon Nigo’s highly anticipated comeback album I Know NIGO!, including Arya with A$AP Rocky, Want It Bad with Kid Cudi, Hear Me Clearly with Pusha T and Heavy with Lil Uzi Vert. The BAPE founder has finally released the full project, and the feature list has gotten even more impressive with the additions of A$AP Ferg, Clipse, Gunna, Pop Smoke, Teriyaki Boys and Tyler, the Creator, who bookends the album.

Tyler kicks off the record with Lost and Found Freestyle, a reunion with A$AP Rocky which was presumably written shortly after the duo’s 2018 Potato Salad freestyle. Tyler later closes out the album with the banger Come On, Let’s Go. On the Pharrell-produced track, Tyler doesn’t waste a minute as he raps about punctuality, fitting for a song less than two minutes in length. Over a pulsing synth, a heavy bassline and the sound of a ticking clock, the rapper complains about his date taking too long to get ready, yet it never sounds cheesy. Both sonically and visually, Come On, Let’s Go is a perfect fit for the atmosphere which Tyler built on last year’s Call Me If You Get Lost.

Albums Spotlight 💿

Every year since 2007, XXL Magazine has ushered in ten new artists-to-watch with their Freshman Class series. Perhaps the greatest group was the Freshman Class of 2016, which included Anderson .Paak, Dave East, Desiigner, G Herbo, Kodak Black, Lil Dicky, Lil Uzi Vert, Lil Yachty, 21 Savage and Denzel Curry. Unlike many of his adlib-heavy, mumble rapping alumni, Denzel built his brand through non-genre conforming experimentation, revamping his sound on every project.

With his fifth studio album, Melt My Eyez See Your Future, the 27-year old rapper has done it again — this time giving up his characteristic hardcore sound in favor of something more mellow. As Denzel trades in his mosh-pit classics for jazzier beats, listeners are transported to the boom bap, golden age of hip hop. Though his music is not as livewire on this record, Denzel is still able to extend his creative palette. With bepop, punk, dancehall and soul beats, Denzel is as experimental as ever.
