Can we have a little “precented times” …again?

It’s been an increasingly tough year to be a human let alone a business in the past few months. More than ever, we are witnessing extreme weather events, climate pressures, unfolding systemic societal and market failures and cultural dis-unity. That’s why more than ever, we need to focus and re-focus our endeavours to offer more than just business as usual, more than just aid in hard times, and more than just corporate social responsibility. While aid, CSR and donations are all urgently needed to assist those in peril both here and abroad, we also urgently need a policy reframe to help us adapt and adjust our systems to meet the demands of a changing climate. Social enterprises are underpinned by our resolute demand that social, cultural and environmental systems change must lead and drive progressive economic frameworks.

After reviewing the proposed federal budget, we still have a long way to go to shift the paradigm if we are to reach beyond a baseline of ‘net zero emissions'. Of course, it makes economic sense to live within the limits of the resources we use, but we must also lean in to address the social, environmental and cultural capital.

How can we all help?

At QSEC, we are diligently designing programs for regional hub activation alongside the ecosystem to help grow the social enterprise movement across Queensland. Our aim is to identify the solid regenerative business solutions which social enterprises have built to address social, cultural and environmental issues. We intend to connect with industry and business partners who have expressed a keen interest in changing their models to include social impact in their procurement chains. We are building promotional tools to help demonstrate the true value social enterprises offer which will attract the general public, government and businesses alike in the upcoming Queensland Small Business Month in May. Similarly, we hope to present the Queensland social enterprise value to a global audience at the Social Enterprise World Forum in September. The promotional tools are being designed by Rachel Whitworth (House of Eden Studio and Hello Good World), ably assisted by videography Joshua McGuire and assembled for web by our friends at Green Fox Studio. The promotional campaign will feature stills, stories and videos from diverse social enterprises from across Queensland, each making a difference in their own way. We are immensely proud of the work social enterprises do every day in our communities.

Through this program, QSEC is thrilled to be working alongside many of sector’s leaders in the lead up to the Social Enterprise World Forum, and throughout this next year to help resource and equip agile entrepreneurs to adapt to meet the emerging challenges together.

The recent Workforce Summit held by the Queensland Government reminded us that many big business and industry players are facing common issues and problems in accessing trained and eager workforces and supply chain issues. The tools released by Queensland Government to help shape the workforce is a very useful place to start thinking about your response to these issues. There are social and cultural issues challenging major cities and regional towns, from housing and transportation, to health and education shortfalls. Environmental challenges are unraveling through water and air quality to waste streams and deforestation. Social enterprises can design market-based solutions to address these place-based issues and entrepreneurs need to be enabled and resourced to respond and scale to demand.

Earth Hour in March reminded us too, that as individuals we can all make a difference by choosing the supply chains we purchase through. Conscious consumerism is one way of making a difference with every dollar; when, where and how we travel,  what we buy, how we consume, and our consistent demand for transparent, sustainable loops for production and waste.

But the elephant in the room is how we re-set the policy for big carbon users across the globe, for systems change at the federal, state and local level. In the lead up to the May federal election, it is our responsibility, individually, to review the plans and vision for what “better” looks like through the lens of the political spectrum. Collectively we will make a decision to shape the future by the choices we make on election day. The Alliance for Social Enterprise Networks Australia (ASENA) have worked together to craft an awareness campaign to help raise the platform for social enterprise at the national level. QSEC will invite members and supporters to join us to talk to candidates from all parties about the opportunity for social enterprise to play a role in the regeneration of our nation.

At the recent Social Enterprise conversation hosted by our friends the Brisbane Economic Development Agency at the Brisbane Business Hub, our esteemed speakers Professor Ingrid Burkett (Griffith University) and Steve Williams (CQUni) posed that rather than “build back better” we need to learn back better” and address circular, regenerative and human centred design of what “better” looks like.

We are very grateful for the insights shared by Joseph Wallace (Muthana Property Services), Amanda Shepherd (Green Fox Studio) and Yasmin Grigaliunas (World’s Biggest Garage Sale) on how their businesses were shaped by the current economic pressures and have changed their practice to adapt. Tom Allen was our very capable MC and we are delighted to be co-hosting the next Brisbane network event 3 May 2022 together. Don’t miss this!

Throughout Small Business Month (May 2022) we will be hosting a range of forums, webinars and discussions to help identify and connect social enterprise with industry and small business opportunities. Watch out for more information!
