IDIDAHIKE 2022

The13th IDIDAHIKE Fundraising Event
Submitted by Dawn Brown

The very successful 13th IDIDAHIKE was hosted by the Apalachee Chapter this past February. The main purpose of the IDIDAHIKE is to raise funds to help maintain the trails, but the IDIDAHIKE is a wonderful opportunity to bring more public awareness to our trails. The well-attended event was staged on the riverfront in St Marks which is located on the Florida National Scenic Trail (FNST). Over $10,000 was raised! About 200 people registered for the hiking event and those in attendance hiked a total of 1980 miles!  To put this in perspective the FNST is 1300 miles long and the Florida Trail System is about 1600 miles long.  Eleven hikes, ranging in diverse ecosystems and distances, were led on sections of the FNST in the Aucilla Wildlife Management Area and the St Marks National Wildlife Refuge. After hiking, IDIDAHIKE participants gathered in the charming City Park at St Marks for an afternoon of snacks, a silent auction, yoga and live music provided by members of the Apalachee Chapter.

It is impossible to give credit to all who helped make this community event a success.  A big thank you goes to the financial donations from local corporate sponsors, the guidance from FTA staff and to volunteers from members from other FTA chapters. Last but not least, thanks go out to the dedicated Apalachee Chapter members who planned the event and who logged many sweaty hours getting the beautiful trails ready to share with others.  In all, there were 192 hours of trail maintenance logged by volunteers.  The total number of volunteer hours logged by everyone involved with the event was 1643.  A huge effort by all concerned.
