Introducing ExeCargo's Bikes

After months of testing and researching the dozens of different ecargo bikes available , we have now placed our orders for two bikes - we can't wait for them to arrive.
We are planning to launch ExeCargo at Active travel Day in the Strand , Exmouth, on 30th April  - do come along and have a ride !

We have chosen two bikes which can carry children AND cargo . The  Raleigh Stride2 Family bike     and the amazing Transformer of cargo bikes , the Tern GSD S10 which can carry cargo , two kiddies or an adult passenger .

Exmouth Cycles have given the project a huge boost by offering to deal  with the storage, hire and maintenance of the ecargobikes on behalf of Transition Exmouth.

One - off hire rates will be £33 per day , with special rates for regular business users and free use for community groups.  The aim is to get the ecargo bikes out and about in Exmouth as much as possible, so that people can see what a fantastic alternative they are to cars and vans.
If you're interested in using Execargo regularly for your business or community group  , please contact us

To book the ecargo bikes , contact Exmouth Cycles on

We massively appreciate every single pledge, and we hope everyone who contributed will come and celebrate the launch with us at Active Travel Day

29Minute talk about  IXORA ENERGY
"not perfect, but better than Russian Gas..."

GREEN DRINKS THURSDAY 7th APRIL 7.30pm
at   Sundowners  the Strand, Exmouth

Chris Jenkins will be introducing Ixora Energy, which he describes as "not perfect, but better than Russian gas."  It has the potential to be a reliable source of gas and electric 24/7 365 days a year for homes in the East Devon area . Anaerobic digestion (AD) captures naturally occurring biogas from waste products like farm manures, grass, crops, food waste and even sewage to run engines which produce electric or clean up the biogas to a quality that is put into the national grid main gas line.  Come along and find out more !

Green Drinks is always on the first Thursday of the month from 7.30.  We open with a 29 Minute speaker who gives a short talk followed by an open discussion. The evening then carries on as a social , a chance to meet new friends and old .   If you can't join us at Sundowners but would like a zoom link , please contact us

ACTIVE TRAVEL DAY 30TH APRIL 2022
 VOLUNTEERS NEEDED !

Along with ETC and other organisations, Transition Exmouth is holding an Active Travel Day in The Strand between 10am to 4pm on Saturday 30th April. The aim of this event is to promote awareness and engagement with cycling and walking as alternatives to use of the car to access the town centre, and for travelling around the town. There will be a number of stalls on the day with national and local organisations and firms promoting sustainable transport. We’re hoping that some of these will be offering practical e-bike demos and trialling.

We’re looking for volunteers to help out with marshalling on this day, such as helping to direct traffic onto and off of The Strand, helping to unload / load vans and cars, helping to rig up and rig down gazebos, and acting as general safety monitors. We particularly need your help for this event between 9 – 10am during setting up and between 4 – 5pm when rigging down, so if you can spare a few hours or more, during the morning or afternoon taking in these times then please get in touch: david1672@yahoo.com).

MEMORIAL TO JOANNA TOOLE

On Saturday 5th March 2022 friends and family of Joanna Toole met and held a ceremony to unveil a memorial to her on the Exe Estuary Trail on the outskirts of Exmouth.

Joanna Toole who spent her young life in Exmouth died, with 156 others, three years ago on 10th March in the crash of Ethiopian Airlines ET302 in Tulu Fara, Ethiopia.
At the time of her death Joanna, who had turned 36 only three days before, was living in Rome and working for the UN's Food and Agriculture Organisation. She had been en route to the United Nations Environment Assembly in Nairobi, Kenya where she was to have presented on Ocean Plastic pollution.
Just last week, heads of State, Ministers of environment and other representatives from 175 nations at the 2022 round of the same Assembly, endorsed a historic resolution to end plastic pollution by forging an international legally binding treaty by 2024. The resolution addresses the full lifecycle of plastic, including its production, design and disposal.
A delegate at the Assembly has praised Joanna's work on the plastic crisis, writing:
"Joanna’s input and expertise on plastic matters have been an invaluable guidance and I have used many of her briefings and input for this work. This is very much also her win."
It is a comfort therefore to those close to her to know that progress has been made that promises an end to this plague of plastic.

Joanna's father Adrian, a member of Transition Exmouth,  has been planning a physical memorial for his daughter for over two years. With the cooperation of Richard Scott and Jeff Trail, both Devon County Council councillors, and help from professionals and volunteers, the existing bench was renovated and the sculptured panel attached. Design was by Jo 'Salty' Salter with metal-work by Anthony Doble. Landscape design by Graham Bell of Exmouth in Bloom.
The sculpture bench was unveiled by Exmouth Mayor, Cllr. Steve Gazzard, in front of a crowd of friends, relatives, professional colleagues and well-wishers.   The bench is on the Exe Estuary Trail with views across the estuary from Exmouth up to Countess Weir. When Joanna was at home in Exmouth she would frequently exercise running this route.
The wording of the tribute on the sculpture plaque is:
As you pause here to enjoy the view, think of Joanna Toole from Exmouth who ran many times on this trail.
Jo's life mission was to protect animals, including marine creatures. She wants you to think not only on what you can see but also on all the hidden life below.
Born Exeter 7 March 1983, died Ethiopia 10 March 2019.   You can scan the QR code on the bench to learn about Jo's work.

Cllr Steve Gazzard, Mayor of Exmouth said:
'It was an honour to attend the unveiling of the memorial for Jo, it was a wonderful tribute to her hard work and dedication; now her memory will live on in Exmouth."
Her father Adrian Toole said:
"I'm so pleased to have this memorial to Jo in her home town. My colleagues in the Joanna Toole Foundation and I have many other initiatives around the world to keep her name and her mission alive but this is something tangible and local that I am very proud of. My thanks to all who have helped with the project."

LIBRARY OF THINGS UPDATE

As summer approaches the Exmouth Library of Things has been thriving. As well as their Saturday morning opening time of 10 am to 1 pm, items can be picked up on a Wednesday evening on request.

Opening times:
Saturday morning 10:00 - 12:30 and Wednesday evening on request (18:30-19:30)

Membership fees:
£10 for 4 months
£15 for 6 months
£30 for 12 months

Telephone number: 07735 029404

Particularly popular at the moment is equipment for the festival season - a selection of camping equipment including camping stoves, cool boxes and camping chairs are available as well as pop-up tents and a six person tent for larger groups. When you compare the cost of new camping equipment the small fee for membership of Library of Things makes for a wonderfully cheap holiday family holiday.

Carpet cleaners are also very popular, and recent storms saw a surge in the loan of DIY tools of which there is huge selection.

Family re-unions also bring in those wanting temporary use of equipment such as play pens, high chairs and push chairs.

BUY LOCAL WITH ZER0

An urgent message from our local zero waste shop, Zero Exmouth:

"Please support your local ZERO WASTE SUPERMARKET!  Zero have worked for free for years on so many days as owners to keep the prices low for everyone and many items cost no more than an average supermarket. Plastic bags covering your food give the delusion your are buying more in many instances and packaging is clever for sales but can be brutal for the environment as all know. Sadly the shop has not been supported since the pandemic .
Zero's lowest trading day EVER took a total of £53. We would have been financially better staying in bed, It costs us hundreds a day to operate -  the shop rent in Exmouth is huge and we pay above the living wage and using ethical suppliers. Unless indie stores are supported, you will lose them. Our local neighbours have also expressed how quiet they are.

Please support your local stores, change the dynamic, support people who support change, support people who march for change, support people who believe in change, or nothing will change.
So many business owners are ashamed when they have a slow day, week or month and everyone is suddenly shocked when they close, but we aren’t. We aren’t going to close; we are going to keep sharing and growing and working incredibly hard, we are more bothered about the environment and the people we support, extending to employ more local people and supporting more artisans and growing so we can complete the vital projects we have started. If we wanted to start a business to be rich we wouldn’t have started a zero waste store, but we wanted to start a business for change both in England, Colombia and everywhere in between. We have recently worked directly with suppliers and it’s not ok how people are exploited to pick our food.
No one can make, pack, export pasta for 23p - your food is only cheap as some poor bugger somewhere else is being heavily exploited, the environment and the people deserve a fairer more equal society."

SAFER WALKING AND CYCLING
WITH NEW CHANGES TO THE HIGHWAY CODE

New changes to the Highway Code mean that those walking, wheeling and cycling are now recognised as the most vulnerable road users, making their safety of paramount importance. Sustrans and partners have informed the Department of Transport's newest changes to the highway code which came into effect this January.

1. New hierarchy of road users

The new hierarchy of road users ensures that those who can do the greatest harm have the greatest responsibility to reduce the danger they may pose to others.

At the top of this hierarchy (as most vulnerable) are people who are walking, in particular children, disabled people and older adults.

Therefore a person cycling assumes responsibility to look out for the safety of those walking.

In the same way, a driver has responsibility for those walking, wheeling, cycling and horse riding.

2. Dutch Reach

The Highway Code will now advise people to use the Dutch Reach method when getting out of a vehicle or when opening a vehicle door from within.

In practice, the Dutch Reach is simply the act of opening a vehicle door by using the arm which is closest to the centre of the vehicle when seated.

This action causes the person inside the car to look over their shoulder and out of the window to check for other nearby road users.

3. Safety at Junctions

When people are crossing or waiting to cross at a junction, people driving, riding a motorcycle or cycling should give way. The previous version said pedestrians had priority only “if they have started to cross”. Crossing the road can be daunting, especially for older people or those with small children.

If people have started crossing and traffic wants to turn into the road, the people crossing have priority and the traffic should give way.

People driving and riding motorcycles are to give way at junctions to people on cycles or horses

The Highway Code will now state that at a junction, people in vehicles who want to turn should not cut across people who are travelling straight ahead on cycles or horses.

This applies whether there is a cycle lane in place or if a person is travelling on the road. Drivers about to turn into a junction or side road should also now give way to pedestrians crossing or waiting to cross.

5. Safer passing distances for overtaking people cycling and horse riding

People driving are now instructed to leave a distance of at least 1.5 metres when overtaking people who are cycling or horse riding.

And at least two metres are required when overtaking people who are walking on roads without pavements.

Myths and Facts of the Highway Code changes

A few myths surround these changes, promulgated by media stories such as "cyclists will be in the middle of the road" and "only drivers are asked to be considerate".
