A Message from Our CSF  ClubPresident

Fellow Silent Flyers,

It feels like we are coming out of an extended winter, one that has lasted for two years for many. Despite this, our club has come through in good shape. We have a great  flying site in excellent condition. We are fiscally sound. We have new members joining the club and old members that we are welcoming back. We have several new trainees that we will be introducing to the hobby.

We are also planning the return of our annual events including an Open House, Swap Meet, AMA Day, and the notorious Camp & Fly - all capped off by the annual Turkey Day events!

I look forward to seeing all of you at the field soon and often in 2022!

CSF Safety Director's Update

Hello Fellow Pilots,

I would like to take this opportunity to point out some new safety signage that you will see inside the shelter area this year. These signs are posted as reminders to follow the recognized safe practices that we have always asked of club members.

These practices include:

1) Always use your transmitter throttle lock so that we have no swinging propellers under the shelter roof area.

2) Activate your transmitter's throttle lock and throttle stick position safety features. Verify their positions each time before plugging your battery into your aircraft regardless of its location.

3) Use LIPO safe charging bags whenever charging your batteries.

We are in the process of installing a metal storage box containing a few "loaner" lipo charging bags for those who may forget and leave theirs at home. Please return the charging bags to the field storage box marked for them before leaving the field.

If needed, a fully stocked first aid kit is available in the large storage locker under the shelter roof. A fire extinguisher is also located inside this locker. This storage locker uses the same access codes as the front gate, port-o-let and charging station control box.

Finally, I want to remind you to always "call out" your intentions when flying. Loudly announce when you are taking off, landing, starting a low pass over the runway, or need to make an emergency landing, and include the runway travel directions (North to South or South to North) for each of these announcements. Also call out if you have a lost signal or if you feel a crash is imminent.  Don't be meek—make your instructions heard. It is good to get in the habit of calling out your intentions even if you are flying by yourself.

We have a great safety record at CSF and want to preserve that again this year. And most importantly we want everyone have an enjoyable and safe flying experience at CSF!

Craig "Ace" Eisentrout's 3D printed Infinity wing is finished and ready to be maidened this spring. Can't wait to see her fly! She is certainly an unusual design and a very elegant looking airplane. Great job!
Spring 2022 Flight Training Update

In the spring, a young (and old) man's fancy turns to FLYING!
(apologies to Tennyson!) With the days getting longer and warmer, one starts thinking more and more about dusting off the wings, charging the batteries, and heading off to the airfield.

The same goes for those who have never flown before. They find themselves thinking that they want to learn to fly an R/C airplane or a helicopter. This is where we come in.

Ever since the CSF has been in existence (over 15 years now) we've offered flight training to those interested in the hobby. We will do so once again this spring.

In past years, we have had an open training format. Just show up, and we'll put you in the air. In the past we have offered training on Monday and Wednesday evenings depending upon the weather. That worked great for many years but it kind of fell apart the last few years due to wind, rain and the pandemic.  Last year, it seemed that we barely had any solid training nights before the shortened fall evenings set in.

This year, we would like to try something a little different. We still plan on Monday evenings as our primary training night, and we still plan to match up instructors with students. We would like to let the student and instructor work out a time and day of week that is most convenient for both. If instructors can't make it on a particular night, they can always ask for a substitute instructor to cover for them.

We still need more instructors.

If you are a past instructor or would like to become one, please drop me a note. As in previous years, instructors will be asked to provide planes, batteries, and transmitters. We think that trainees are more likely to try the hobby if they don't have to make the initial investment to do so. Once they try it, they will like it! (OK, I don't remember what commercial that came from.)

If you are not yet a student and are reading this, or if you know someone interested in learning to fly RC, please drop me an email so that I can put you on the training notification list. My email address is harness2017@gmail.com

Impressive Winter Build Project
This beautiful Super Chipmunk is a 3D printed model belonging to Michael Pence. It was printed by "Ace" Eisentrout and built by Michael over the winter. She is really a beauty as you can see. Congrats to Michael for all the fantastic detail that he added.  Can't wait to see her flying at CSF soon!
CSF Member Poll on All-Time Favorites

We polled our members to find out which of their airplanes they would fly in 2022 if they had to pick just one. We received a wide variety of responses that we will now share with you. Some responses are abbreviated because those who had a favorite airplane gave a lot more details than we have room to print.

Here they are:
  • Craig Eisentrout - Pulse XT25e - has flown it 5x more than any other airplane!
  • Bryan Dooley - Precision Aerobatics Ultimate Bipe - loves the versatility of different types of flying you can do with it! (But Bryan's all time favorite (RIP) was his CalFire OV-10 Bronco).
  • J. Carter - Turbo Timber Evolution - It just flies so beautifully!
  • Bob Dombeck- E-Flite Extra 300 - a sweet flier!
  • Steve Harness - Almost any kind of foamie - easy to fly and you can easily adjust the rates to your flying style and skill level
  • Warren Williamson - Pink Foamie- most fun flying of any slab of foam that I own!
  • Mike Smith - my 71" AJ Slick from 3D Hobby Shop - amazing in everything it does!
  • Mike Coalson - Parkzone Stinson SR-10 - no longer in production but still my favorite.
  • Jerry Biscopink - Easy decision -green "Bud Weise"R" foamie that was built for me by Warren Williamson - most fun I ever had flying anything!

And maybe the best answer of all:
  • Bryan Hurst - Extra 300 - Because it is the only airplane I have! (Bryan is mostly a heli guy!).

So - there you have it. And the planes that these pilots named as favorites they really do love! Just ask them. So if you are looking for something new to fly in 2022, you might want to ask these pilots about one of these airplanes. Even those currently out of production still can show up in swap meets!
New Product Notification
For you Cirrus lovers, Horizon Hobby has re-introduced the 1.5m Cirrus SR 22T which is available now for pre-order. It is an updated version of the earlier HH Cirrus offered a couple years ago of the same size. The new version sports the red color scheme and SMART telemetry options. This is a very docile flying airplane that looks extremely scale in the air and on the ground. It is truly a joy to fly. Better get one while they last as the earlier model sold out in just a few months.
Field Maintenance Update

Hi Pilots and welcome to the 2022 flying season.

The field, although still a little wet at this time, is in very good condition. New security locks have been installed and securiity access codes changed for this year (thanks Steve Harness).Make sure that you have paid your 2022 CSF club dues to Kevin Krieg so that you don't miss out on any flying days this spring.

We ask our club members every year to do their part to help us maintain the field. Please take a minute to pick up and properly dispose of any trash that you find on the field or along the entrance driveway.  Any large sticks or limbs should be picked up and tossed into the fire pit or the woods. This really helps save wear and tear on the mowing equipment.

And finally, remember that the last person leaving the field is always responsible for locking up. That means checking the locks on the charging stations, storage locker, Port-0-let and most importantly the front gate. You are our only line of field security so please take this duty seriously.

Thanks as always for your continuing support and hope to see each of you at the field again this year.

Keep Flying,

Jerry Biscopink
Field Maintenance Coordinator
Winter Combat Build
One club member (who asked to remain anonymous) sent in this picture of a modified Flite Test Bloody Wonder that was purpose built for "Combat" season. It was designed to fly on a 4S 2200 mAh battery. He stated that it was not built for good looks but rather to "eat" other combat planes.  A very competitive combat season is expected at CSF in 2022.
