On April 4, 1968, civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr., 39, was shot and killed while standing on a balcony of the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennessee. His slaying was followed by a wave of rioting.

New Civil Rights Marker in Nashville
|
|
Last month, the Nashville Parks and Recreation Department unveiled a historical marker recognizing the racially motivated closure of the city's swimming pools in 1961. It was an act that until recently had been covered over in the city's history, just as the pools were covered.
The following are excerpts from Nashville’s NewsChannel5 coverage of the unveiling:
"There are people still alive today who remember, because of the color of their skin, they could not go swimming," said Supervisor of Visual Arts Joshua Wagner. “In two days, all 21 pools around the city were shut down.”
Dr. Augustus Bankhead, a Tennessee State University professor at the time, wrote a letter to the editor of the Tennessean because he could not be silent any longer. "The pool closed for reasons that were just totally unnecessary," he said.
This was during the time that Nashville was changing, seeing students fight for the desegregation of their city. Five years after the pool's closing, Bankhead remembers standing at the gate surrounding it.
"It never reopened," he said. "I just felt the desire, need, whatever to say something."
Bankhead's letter July 1966 letter was titled “Dry Pool Is Grim Monument.” In it, he said, "Let it stand as a reminder that in this decade, we were not ready to accept men as men."
His letter is part of a display that was at the Centennial Art Center throughout March 2022.

It's time for graduation! This year, American Baptist College returns to its two-day graduation activities. The Baccalaureate Service will be re-instated in addition to the Commencement Ceremony.
The Baccalaureate Service will be Wednesday, May 18, at 6 p.m. and the Commencement Ceremony will Thursday, May 19, at 11 a.m. Both events will be held at Jefferson Street Missionary Baptist Church, located at 2708 Jefferson Street.
The speaker for the Baccalaureate Service will be Rev. Aaron Marble, pastor of Jefferson Street, and the Commencement speaker is Rev. Christopher Bernard Davis, Associate Dean/Director of Community Engagement, Memphis Theological Seminary, and President of the Tennessee Baptist Missionary & Educational Convention, Inc.
