Dear <<First Name>>,

The current state of our world is deeply worrying, and you may be feeling like you can't escape or cope with the continuous bad news that seems to be pouring out from around the world all at once. As such, your 'watchdog' might be on high alert at the moment. This is entirely reasonable and normal.

In this month's newsletter, I want to help you learn to quiet the 'watchdog', and soothe false alerts to enable you to maintain mental wellbeing.

How to Cope During Times of War and Conflict

We have all been shocked and saddened by the war in Ukraine over the past month, which has killed hundreds of soldiers and civilians and displaced millions. However, the compulsive need to keep informed on what is happening in Ukraine has understandably taken a toll on our mental health, causing increased anxiety and stress.
There is no simple fix to cure anxiety, but what you can do is take measures to cope with feelings of stress and uncertainty - to 'quiet the watchdog'.

Here are a few of my top tips:
1. Only listen to or read the news once a day, preferably in the middle of the day - not first thing in the morning, or just before you go to bed.

2. Do things you love, such as reading a book, doing some crafting or art, or baking a delicious treat.

3. Plan to go outdoors for some gentle exercise or quiet time to soothe your mind, release endorphins, and appreciate the beauty of nature.

4. Resist their urge to isolate yourself. If you are feeling particularly anxious or scared, call a family member, friend, or even a mental health organisation.

5. Write down how you are feeling, as it can help to get your thoughts out of your head and onto paper.

7. Laugh, smile, and find happiness in your own world.
Ultimately, we can’t control the outcome of the conflict. However, what we can do is control how much news we consume, or how we deal with feelings of stress and anxiety. By doing this, we can improve our mental health and retain our sense of wellbeing when the world feels out of control.
