ECSA Conference 2022 in Berlin

As announced, the 4th ECSA Conference runs under the cross-cutting theme of Citizen Science for Planetary Health. The concept of planetary health is based on the understanding that human health and human civilization depend on thriving natural systems and the sustainable stewardship of those natural systems.

We invite researchers from all disciplines, civil society actors, citizen scientists, policy decision-makers and all interested in the topic in Europe and worldwide to reflect, discuss and network around the topic of Citizen Science for Planetary Health.

The call for proposals is now open until April 30, 2022. We look forward to seeing you in Berlin.

All info and submissions are available here:

Presentation of the project ISEED

"We face a crisis in democratic ideals in Europe. Societal challenges such as poverty and the international financial crises, the COVID crisis and now the war in Ukraine can stimulate public scepticism around democratic process and lead to distrust and disengagement with political process and democracy in Europe. The question ISEED explores is: Can citizen science offer useful lessons for how to engage people in Europe to contribute to the knowledge-based democratic governance of Europe?  ISEED: Inclusive Science and European Democracies is a H2020 project joining 12 partners from Europe and Latin America to explore this question through four linked streams of work, spanning theoretical conceptualisations of the public sphere, to studying cases of citizen engagement and developing computational tools to study polarisation and emotions online."

The art+science collective based in Southern Tuscany is now gearing up to send a delegation to the Netherlands, on a "non-formal" education tour which is expected to touch Northern Italy, Germany, Holland, Belgium, France, and Switzerland. It is possible to take part in the co-design of the tour, either as an artist, as a thematic expert, or as a sponsor. Please write to micalosapevo@pibinko.org for more information.

Crowdsourcing research questions in science

New evidence shows that involving citizens more in the early stages of research studies could be key to generating new, innovative perspectives and promoting impactful research. These results have been published in the journal Research Policy. More specifically, on average the crowdsourced questions were less novel and scientifically relevant, but the top 20% of research questions developed by citizens outperformed those of experts on all dimensions. Here the Open Access publication:

Adapting Citizen Science App-Icons to a new technology

App-Icons are a crucial part of every Citizen Science App; it is often the first impression that participants see when joining up, and the icon represents your project directly on a user's phone. Technology evolves, and so does how an App-Icon works. On the SPOTTERON Citizen Science App platform, all projects are upgraded to the "Adaptive Icon" technology, allowing flexible display, compatibility, and even animation of their App-Icon. Austrian Citizen Science Award starts in April

The Center for Citizen Science in Vienna is organising the “Citizen Science Award” competition for children, teenagers and adults. From April until the beginning of June 2022 Austrian school classes and individuals will be invited to participate in seven citizen science projects. Winners will receive (non-) cash prizes.Get more information here

Summary of experiences with hard-to-reach groups

Last year the Center for Citizen Science in Vienna organised four events with the focus on hard-to-reach groups. Recently, a documentation (in German) has been published summarising the discussions among the participants. The brief overview provides food for thought for work with previously unreached population groups can be found here

Marine Ranger App

The Blue World Institute developed Marine Ranger mobile app for reporting sightings of marine mammals of Adriatic and Mediterranean. The app provides list and details about all Mediterranean species needed for identification. Through the app users can provide sighting location and details and upload photos or videos. In case animal is in distress, by-caught or stranded users can call relevant service directly from the app. App is available for Android and iOS and is developed within EU LIFE Delfi project. Webinar Report: Inclusive & transformative Citizen Social Science with young people

Citizen Social Science with young people can help to develop more knowledge and innovation to make European societies more inclusive and youth-friendly. The working group on “Empowerment, Inclusiveness and Equity” by ECSA and LKN co-organized three webinars together with the YouCount project for knowledge exchange on the topic. Discussions and lessons learned on inclusive and transformative SCS with young people are summaried in this freshly published report.

SEEDS

How to empower teenagers in health issues

Health and Education are intrinsically related: improvements in education produce better health outcomes and vice versa. This is one of the focus of SEEDS (https://seedsmakeathons.com/), a project done by teenagers for teenagers based on citizen science to create new experiments for healthy lifestyles. Now SEEDS published a practical guide for teachers and educators providing information on four issues (healthy snacks, physical activity, sedentary behavior and screen time) of primary importance in the lives of teenagers. It also proposes some practical tips to apply in the daily practice to help teachers to empower their students. The guide is available in 6 languages (Catalan, English, Dutch, Greek, Italian, Spanish).

Find the blog post about it here.
