April 2022

Dear all,

Welcome to our first newsletter of 2022 and my first as Chair. As you'll read below we've had a strong start to the year with the launch of our Principles Update Process, Scope 3 Topic Team, and our celebration of World Water Day, highlighting our continued support for the revitalization of the Musi River in Hyderabad. We are also delighted to have welcomed six new members to the PSCI, bringing our total membership to 60.

Whilst we can see spring on the horizon, not all changes so far this year have been positive. We remain concerned with the growing humanitarian crisis in Ukraine and the impact this is having on its people and neighboring countries. That's why I hosted a forum last month on behalf of the Board and Human Rights & Labor Topic Team to offer space for members to discuss responses and the impact of the crisis on our supply chains. You can see a summary of that discussion here.

Speaking of spring, our annual Spring Meeting is just around the corner (17-19 May) and registrations are now open! You can register here. Whilst we're still hosting the meeting virtually this year, I am looking forward to seeing some familiar and new faces at our Virtual Member Drinks.

Best wishes,

VICKI STONE-BJARUP
PSCI Chair and Senior Project Manager & Responsible Sourcing Programme Manager, Novo Nordisk

Human Rights Due Diligence in Practice
Thursday 21 April 2022, 14:00 - 15:00 EST

Requirements of human rights due diligence up and down value chains are being increasingly adopted both in the EU (currently as a draft proposal for mandatory measures) and in India (through its National Guidelines on Responsible Business and the upcoming launch the National Action Plan on Business & Human Rights).

Human rights are a challenging issue for businesses, especially when dealing with their suppliers. It is therefore important to ensure that human rights are understood by managers and employees, and made operational in corporate environments. Building on the presentation delivered at the 2021 PSCI Supplier Conference in India (available here), this webinar will:

  • Provide a deep dive into the human rights due diligence process from policy to action
  • Offer guidance for identifying & prioritizing sectoral risks for the pharmaceutical sector - Scope & Scale
  • End with an online survey to test participants' learning
We are delighted to be joined by Rishi Sher Singh, Specialist in Business & Human Rights.

Sign up details are available here.

Stage 1 now live: The PSCI Principles Update Process

As part of our regular three-year cycle, we have started the process of updating the PSCI Principles. The process will run in two stages.
  • Stage 1: Gathering ideas and suggestions (March - July 2022)
  • Stage 2: Drafting, refining, and seeking approval (August 2022 - May 2023)

For Stage 1, we’ll be opening the consultation to all members, suppliers, partners, and other subject matter experts. Any member can submit their views in this way.

How you can engage and share your views?

The best way to engage is through active participation in the Topic Teams. All Topic Teams will be reviewing and discussing their relevant sections of the Principles and submitting comments. If you’d like to take this opportunity to join a Topic Team, please join via their pages on The Link. You can also submit your views without becoming a full member of a Topic Team. All initial views should be submitted by 21 June 2022. You can see more information here.

Members' Forum on Ukraine

The PSCI expresses concern with the ongoing and rapidly developing humanitarian crisis in Ukraine. As a membership body dedicated to responsible supply chain practices, we seek to provide resources and information to support our members’ practices regarding human rights issues. Human Rights is one of the foundational commitments of the PSCI Principles and our recently released position statement on Human Rights highlights the tools and resources we share with our members to help them align with the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights.

To enable members to share and learn, the Board and Human Rights & Labor Topic Team co-hosted a forum on the Ukraine crisis. Members shared information on the impact of the crisis on supply chain practices and discussed business and human rights implications and considerations. You can read a summary of the discussion and access further resources here.

Buddy Program

On behalf of the Governance Committee, we are delighted to announce the launch of the PSCI Member Buddy Program. We have matched the first round of applicants for the first quarter of 2022, but this is a rolling program and if you’d like to be included in the next quarterly matching round you can apply here when applications re-open. Any member can sign up to be a Buddy.

The Buddy Program builds on and replaces the previous Mentoring Program. The Buddy Program is member-led and intended to build connections between individual members to help them navigate the PSCI. Unlike the Mentoring Program, the Buddy Program matches individuals on a peer-to-peer basis (1:1).
