Upcoming Events
AAG Monthly Meeting

When: Monday April 11th @ 6:30pm
Where: Aiken Center for the Arts

Our guest speaker this month is Tony Carr, Jr.  He is a well-known multimedia artist residing in North Augusta, SC, and he works in copper, mirror / glass and found objects, stone, and photography.  Mr. Carr is a self-taught artist and creates custom pieces of art. He does restoration of stoneware pottery and other artifacts for museums and collectors on commission.  He creates both two and three dimensional pieces of art, including copper, creating unique lights and woven metal baskets.  He also uses stained glass, creating one-of-a-kind glass wall pieces and mirrors.

In addition, Mr. Carr has a passion for re-purposing found objects into unique and interesting pieces of art.  Found objects may include fossils, semi-precious stones, and antique bottles, which he reclaims and converts into functional light-catchers.  Tony likes to carve the sandstone, native to South Carolina, into interesting and whimsical garden accents which begin to grow moss on their surfaces within a few weeks.   Tony also takes broken pottery pieces, made by slaves in Edgefield, South Carolina in the 1800’s, and fashions these pottery pieces into unique one-of-a-kind works of art.  Another area of Mr. Carr's interest is photography.  He likes to use his camera to capture the beauty that surrounds us all.  His photographic subjects include sunrises, sunsets and anything old, especially old barns, cars, homes and churches.  Mr. Carr has been creating Commission Pieces and selling his work in galleries across the South for over 20 years.  He is the former Vice President of “The Arts and Cultural Council," in North Augusta, SC.  Tony finds joy in creating art and helping to bring art into people's lives.  As Tony says “I am forever learning and passing on knowledge with the hopes that the differences in people will help them find the commonality between us all. That will truly bring everyone together.”

The AAG Gallery dates for 2022 have now been filled.  Thanks to all for a great response.  Openings for 2023 will be announced this fall.
The next exhibit will feature artists Carol Sue Roberts and Sharon Taylor Padgett.  This will begin with a reception on March 31st from 6-8pm.

Carol Sue Roberts
"I am primarily a still life painter. (Note that I used the word painter, not artist. I consider it presumptuous to call myself an artist). Silver, brass, copper, or other shiny objects appear frequently in my paintings. I am fascinated by the effect of light and reflections. All of my still life paintings are from set ups in my studio. The light source may be artificial, or from the north window in my studio, but the source is always from the left. Often rotting fruit or tired flowers struggle while I complete a painting. My favorite painting of a pear on a silver plate is one from nineteen years ago. The pears time on earth had expired (for consuming), but the colors were wonderful".

Carol is the winner of numerous awards and her paintings are in collections internationally.  She has studied extensively with many artists.  She is also a retired organist, but is currently volunteering as an interim organist at All Saints Anglican Church In Aiken.
Sharon Taylor Padgett
Sharon has been painting and teaching for more than 40 years. Originally from Allendale, SC, she grew up in Florida and was influenced by her tropical surroundings. The way light falls on a subject – whether landscape, still life or people is what inspires her art.

Painting in oils and acrylics, her subjects and step-by-step style of teaching is what defines her as a painter.
Sharon studied art at Jacksonville University in Jacksonville, Fl., and from various accomplished painters including the late Livio Valentini, Bea Kulhke and Zita Mellon. She has taken many workshops throughout the years gaining knowledge of techniques in painting and
in turn, shares these steps with her students.
She is past-president of the Aiken Artist Guild and a former award-winning newspaper reporter and illustrator. Sharon teaches monthly painting workshops at Aiken Center for the Arts.

Get involved!  Volunteer Position Open
We are still looking for someone to manage the refreshments at the general meeting. This involves emailing or calling the volunteers for each meeting to ask them to bring food, setting up before the meeting and cleaning up after.

Contact Chris McKeel if you can  volunteer for either of these positions at 803-443-8526.
