Dear friends and colleagues, Welcome to the first Housing Rights Watch Newsletter for 2022.
During the first quarter of 2022, the Russian invasion of Ukraine has already had devastating consequences for the right to adequate housing through the displacement of millions of people and the destruction of homes and infrastructure. In face of the humanitarian emergency in Ukraine, FEANTSA has written a position of the matter, calling for EU and its member states to respect international human rights standards for all. UN special rapporteur on the right to adequate housing has also expressed his concerns about the serious violations of the right to adequate housing in Ukraine.
On March 4th, FEANTSA together with residents and other Human Rights organizations submitted a Collective Complaint against Spain for Violation of European Social Charter, by failing to ensure heating and electricity supply to some 4,500 people living in sectors 5 and 6 of Cañada Real.
This newsletter also contains an analysis on how the Danish Supreme Court upholds a verdict that criminalizes poverty, by Elisabet Kass and Ana-Maria Cioraru. On the theme of criminalizing homelessness, you can also find articles on the Vagrancy act and the Policing Bill in the UK.
On 16th of May, we organize a conference: the European contribution to The European contribution to the right to housing: Standards, litigation and advocacy, which will take place in Brussels 9am-5pm. Find more information on our website and stay tuned for the full programme and registration details.
