Right Action: Karma and the Five Mindfulness Trainings

A six week live and on-line course exploring and integrating early Buddhist teachings with Plum Village practices.

Tuesdays 7pm - 9pm PST
May 17 - June 21

The Buddha's teachings on kamma and rebirth have received a mostly mystical treatment among practitioners and commentators resulting in much misconception and confusion about how to apply them in daily life. This course will explore the role of samma kammanto, or Right Action, on the path of liberation and will combine the Buddha's teachings with evolutionary psychology to provide a rationale for an objective morality and ethic. Rather than being resigned to "your karma", a close reading of the early discourses show how you can shape your life in the present and future with skillful actions.

Sister Thoai Nghiem on wanting stillness and having stillness

Join Sugarplum Sangha on Saturday’s at 7:30am PST for a live interpretation of Dharma talks given by Thay and his senior Vietnamese disciples.

In this lively talk given on July 1st, 2020, Sister Thoai Nghiem shared about being aware of her intense fear when facing a rattlesnake at Deer Park monastery, being a gardener and the insights she got from pruning heavy fruit-laden plum trees, pulling up the weeds, and sweeping leaves. What do we have sovereign over and what is "other's business" and still hold the world with understanding and compassion? How to selectively garden our consciousness? How to nourish ourselves when the "I need to finish this work" mentality takes over?

Sister Thoai Nghiem is one of the eldest sisters in the Plum Village tradition and very well-loved and respected by many for her joy, stability and compassion. The original talk given in Vietnamese is here https://youtu.be/Kf3xInK5roY
