Happy Spring! The sun is coming out and I’m looking forward to spending more time outdoors. My office has been working hard for the district, and I’m looking forward to connecting with many of you at my town hall tomorrow evening.

Seaview Avenue Safety Update

Last Friday, my staff members and I joined a few Ballard residents to discuss pedestrian safety improvements on Seaview Avenue. I have been working with neighbors since last fall about their concerns regarding speeding drivers and a lack of safe crossings across Seaview Avenue. Improvements will be implemented in this spring/summer including demarcating driving lanes from parking lanes, a new crosswalk, and additional signage at the "S" curve. After many, many virtual meetings it was nice to meet people in person. Thank you to those who joined, both for their time and expertise!

Re-Opening My District Office

As I mentioned earlier, I’m looking forward to connecting with folks again in person, so I’m excited to be re-opening my district office, coinciding with Mayor Harrell’s return to office protocols. I opened my district office on my 2nd day as your D6 councilmember and had to close it during my 9th week on the job due to the pandemic and public health guidelines. We will continue to monitor and adjust our office protocols based on public health data and information.
My district office is located at the Ballard Customer Service Center which is in the same building as the Ballard Library, though uses a separate door just to the south of the elevator to the parking garage.

Prince of Sweden visits Ballard

Earlier this month I joined the Prince of Sweden, along with 50 Swedish business leaders and entrepreneurs who are visiting the US. His Royal Highness Prince Daniel bestowed Erik Nelson, the CEO of the National Nordic Museum with the honor as Knight First Class, Royal Order of the Polar Star. Erik Nelson received this recognition in 2020 and was presented last week for his leadership in our community. He led the funding and the construction of the museum's current building, the place it now calls home. His efforts led to a world class building, evening gaining national recognition as the National Nordic Museum. With Erik Nelson serving as CEO, the museum has transformed from being the Nordic Heritage Museum to the National Nordic Museum, and from being in an old school to a state-of-the-art building.

This week the City Council passed Council Bill 120207, which requires that tree service providers register with the City and holds bad-actors accountable for illegal cutting. As I shared in my last newsletter, this legislation was sponsored by Councilmember Pedersen and me. It's one of four current proposals to strengthen tree protections in Seattle. The other three proposals, proposed by the Seattle Department of Construction and Inspections, are currently on hold pending a legal challenge.
In passing the tree service provider registry legislation, we also adopted several amendments to make the new law stronger. Councilmember Pedersen and I partnered on amendments to establish a clear timeline for tree service providers to register by November 10th; to require that permits for the removal of a hazardous, exceptional tree be submitted by a different tree service provider than the one conducting the removal; and to remove tree service providers from the registry for one year if two violations are committed. I also sponsored an amendment to strengthen the public notice requirements for tree removals to three business days, rather than just three days.

In early January, Mayor Harrell’s team and I intensified homelessness outreach efforts in Upper Woodland Park to address ongoing public health and safety concerns and restore community access to the park. To closely coordinate, my office has been hosting weekly operations meetings with the Mayor’s office, King County Regional Homelessness Authority, REACH outreach workers, the HOPE Team, Seattle Parks and Recreation, and community leaders at the Phinney Neighborhood Association.
Where we are on March 30th 2022: We have completed the by-name list of about 60 people living onsite at the park and we have begun moving people inside. So far 19 individuals have come into shelter and outreach workers are actively working to move 4 more people into shelter this week. The timeline to complete this work is still dependent on shelter availability and we are working as fast as possible to restore the park to its intended use.
