WHEN TO REPLACE YOUR COVER
Your hot tub cover is sagging in the middle is a clear indicator. This causes exposure to corners allowing steam to escape requiring you to top up with water & a significantly higher energy bill.

The cover is much heavier and difficult to remove, it is designed to retain the heat of your hot tub by trapping warm air inside the bubbles of the foam. Over time, the vapor barrier breaks down and allows water to be absorbed.

A saturated cover can be the perfect breeding ground for bacteria and mildew to grow unchecked, producing a foul aroma.

CLEANING YOUR FILTER
Cleaning the filter goes hand in hand with cleaning your hot tub.

Your filter should be rinsed regularly, minimum once a week, based on your hot tub usage and climate. Generally speaking, the rule of thumb is to thoroughly clean your filter once every two to four weeks with a filter cleaner that will allow you to clean between the pleats and remove any deposits.
WHEN TO REPLACE YOUR FILTER
Each time you clean the cartridge, the fabric fibers are stretched apart a little bit more, which reduces the filters ability to trap dirt. Proper cleaning will extend the life of the filter. Depending on the quality of filter average 15-24 filter cleanings or 12 to 24 months.

HOW TO CLEAN YOUR FILTER

TIPS
  • Have a spare spa filter to use while cleaning and drying the dirty spa filter.
  • Drying after cleaning helps kill any remaining bacteria and contaminants.
  • Don't use a brush while cleaning, and don't use a pressure washer.
CLEANING, DRAINING & START UP
There are 3 fundamental areas to CLEANING, DRAINING & START UP of your hot tub

LET'S BEGIN!

Whether your hot tub is brand new or has been in use for years it is in need and requires a good cleaning. All kinds of contaminants can build up in the pipes and on surfaces, like oil grease and as well concern for Biofilm.

It is best to get these things off & out of your hot tub to provide you with the freshest cleanest water possible on start up.

CLEANING
  • First remove your filter a clean filter goes hand in hand with a clean hot tub.
  • Dazzle Filter Cleaning/Mineraluxe Filter Cleanse products offer ease of effectively cleaning your filter though, gentle enough to ensures that the material in your filters do not prematurely breakdown giving value unlike some of the filter cleaners brands. “Cleaning the Filter” for tips.
  • Set the temperature of your hot tub to approx. 90-95 degrees, if you have pillows that can be removed and cleaned this is a good time the area behind the pillows can be nasty.
  • Add a full bottle of Dazzle Drain Prep/Mineraluxe Cleanse & Drain or for those of you who have the added benefit of our new Mineraluxe System.
  • Turn your jets on high for approx. 5-10min
  • Ideal time for cleaning the plumbing-over the next 24hours turn the jets on high 3 or 4 times.
  • At the of 24hrs the cleaning process is complete, time to drain your hot tub
  • Quick clean – minimum time 1hour turning the jets on high frequently

DRAINING

Most hot tubs have a garden hose connection where the system is located which is where I call the doghouse.

If you are at tub side wearing, hat mitts scarf, and have a drippy nose you may wish to speed up the process. If you have a small utility pump this works well. No men you do not need Binford Super 3” duo charged pump recommended by Tim Taylor!

If you do not have a utility pump your local hardware store usually rent these for approx. $20.00 for ½ day rental or alternatively the Pool Place retail small utility pumps for $69.99 and you may find this to be beneficial in draining your hot tub water. If you have access to a wet vac this will remove any bit of water left in the foot well and go around the jets and remove any water left in the lines. This is not necessary however just an additional option.

NOTE: careful not to damage the acrylic when you submerse the pump into the hot tub!

As your hot tub is drains, this is a good time to use the Dazzle Tub Cleanse to wipe surfaces around your hot tub and be behind pillows. Not to worry this product is compatible with tub water & can be used during the cleaning to remove any bathtub ring off the hot tub surface.

CLEAN THE HARD COVER

Let us finish this amazing job & clean the Hard Cover, protect your investment for $20.00 Dazzle Cover Protect & Cleanse will protect the cover from the sun & winter elements. Add small amounts to a clean damp cloth & rub into the vinyl surface.

TIP:  if you notice odors coming from inside the cover a product, I highly recommend NC Clean & Perfect gentle yet amazingly effective. Spray into the underneath of the cover let it soak, give it a brush in & rinse you will find this will address those odors. This product works well in your kitchen & bath as well. If you have a pool & have on hand a bottle of our Pool & Patio Cleanse this works well too.

Rest assured if there is residual it will not play havoc with the hot tub water. Spa insulated blankets are also a great investment especially for older hot tubs that tend to consume more energy. They absorb hot water chemistry and add longer life to your hot tub cover investment.

FILLING THE HOT TUB

Begin filling your hot tub. While filling ad the recommend dose of Dazzle Stain & Scale 1, this product is formulated for cold water. While the spa is heating the minerals & metals will attract to the heater element, you do not want it forming scale this could insulate the heater causing loss of temperature. If you are on our Mineraluxe System 2 cubes will be introduced at start up.

TIP: during filling some hot tubs have what we call a bleeder valve at the filter, have this open to prevent an air bubble, when an air bubble gets trapped in the line it prevents the pumps from turning on if you find this happens and don’t have a bleeder valve you may wish to try cracking open a union slightly (you will hear the air release) tightening the fitting back.

Once filled, set desired temperature. Tip most hot tub systems have a winter or freeze mode to protect your hot tub system. Pumps will not turn on until the temperature is above their set protection of freeze usually around 51 degrees. Once the water temperature has reached approximately 65 degrees take a water sample, elbow depth and not in front of a jet. This can be brought into the Pool Place for testing allowing you to take the guess work out of balancing.

START UP

Upon start up if using the Dazzle Botanical System, applying botanical cleanse will provide a bank to prevent organic build up then oxidizer/shock of choice. My preference is a no chlorine/bromine as a great way to start Amaze Plus or Amaze these products are Ph. neutral and oxidize within 15 min. however there are other products depending on your choice of sanitize, Dazzle offers, Bromine Granules, Chlorine Granules. If you are on our Mineraluxe System open your Oxygen package usually one package is sufficient however apply according to water volume. Salt & pepper over the water. Whatever your choice it is important to remember to leave your hard cover off for a min. of 15 min. allowing burn off the contaminants and to not cause damage to your hard cover.

Depending on your choice of sanitizer usually tablets are the most convenient and bromine is usually a #1 choice for chemistry reasons less finicky, and bather comfort again this is your preference, and we have any chlorine granules, tablets or bromine granules or tablets. If using tablets fill your dispenser with recommended number of tablets, some newer spas have chamber built into the filter system. Those using the Mineraluxe technology you will typically in a 2–3-week period notices a 50% reduction in consumption of sanitizer. This in turn drives down the water balance making hot tub maintenance easy allowing you to enjoy the hot tub without overloading it with chemicals. Remember it is important to use your test strips and ensure you have 3-5 ppm bromine or chlorine residual.

I hope you found this information informative & offered you great tips making hot tub cleaning easier allowing you to enjoy the hot tub experience. Remember however these tips are general in nature always refer to your manufacture’s recommendations. If you have any questions or comments do not hesitate to give a call or email info@poolplace.ca

Job, well done! Now relax & enjoy your hot tub.
